I bought a '91 cbr1000f for my commuter bike between Welly & Upper Hutt (320 km per week) & park free in a covered car park building.

My costs are similar to yours at approx. $ 280 mth ($80 more than the train). I've also had to do a fair bit of maintenance myself to keep costs down.

If Wellington city parking costs came into the equation, i'd simply look for a newish, smaller cc bike for the job.

I caught the train for the past 25+ yrs between Wellington & Upper Hutt..... i need the change for my sanity !

"I am a licenced motorcycle instructor, I agree with dangerousbastard, no point in repeating what he said."
"read what Steve says. He's right."
"What Steve said pretty much summed it up."
"I did axactly as you said and it worked...!!"
    "Wow, Great advise there DB."

I started a job in the city last year, thought I'd give the bus a go...bought a 10 ride ticket.....got 6 rides left on on now 8 months later. 50.00 a week to be left waiting and stand most of the way home was not for me.

Duke does it for about $13.00 a week on fuel. Sometimes I use my lwb ex courier van...takes a bit longer home but more relaxing and you never ever get cut up by ex rickshaw drivers.

The thing is with a bike is that it's so easy to rev it high and enjoy it- even when commuting. This means petrol usage can jump pretty high up to level of a small car. But if you are keeping the riding smooth and steady then yeah the petrol consumption is great... even on a 1L sportbike. Run your tyre pressures high at 40psi and your tyres will last ages as well.
...Full throttle till you see god, then brake.
