My undertsanding is that ICU each patient has a full time nurse (ie one nurse per patient) , more or less. Whereas general ward it's a nurse or two per ward. So they can monitor things much more closely in ICU.

I'm hoping anyway, so I'll run with that theory until I hear something definately bad.

Thougts and prayers . And other suchlike stuff.

Yes it is very common to be yo-yo'd back and forth a bit in the early days of treatment, especially since Dave has had Cardiac surgery and was in an orthapedic ward. Unfortunately hospital staff dont prep you for this (they keep telling you the good stuff that you need to hear!) I discussed this briefly with Daves folks on monday, so hopefully it wont come as too much of a shock.

Cheers for the update VTWIN, keep em coming.

At least in ICU dave wont have a TV so he wont need to watch any of the crappy rugby thats been played lately

Thoughts are with you Dave. Get well soon buddy.

For Daves Mum and Dad: you've probably sussed this already, but if the hospital Dave is in operates anything like Christchurch central you will be wise to only listen to the head of the various departments/ teams that are looking after Dave. By this I means the surgeon or specialist that leads the gaggle of people around.

I'm a fairly regular customer of the health system, and I've been in there with sick relatives etc as well. Invariably a well meaning house surgeon/ registrar or whatever will come along and confidently tell you "this is whats wrong......, this is what we are going to do........". And more often than not they get it wrong.

This can lead to an all day emotional rollercoaster ride....once when I was in hospital there was this diabetic chap across the room that had a toe that was turning black. The house surgeon, registrar and locumn had all been popping in to share their vast knowledge of what was going to happen. I kid you not when, all in the space of a couple of hours, he was told that the toe needed to be amputated. Then it was the foot. Then it was the leg just below the knee. Then it was the leg halfway up the thigh. Then finally at the end of the day the SURGEON came in and said that they may be able to save the toe, but if not that would be all that was amputated.

So please, be very selective about who you listen to!

Dave's mum's a nurse which would help them understand what's going on. Must make it a little bit easier than if they were new to the whole system.

Just caught up with THE man and his wonderful parents. He'll likely be in ICU until next week - maybe Monday?, but with all things considered he's doin okay. I kept the visit short - they don't put ya in ICU cos you're feelin a box of fluffies. But a smile or two were seen, so he's still with us!!

Andre, his father, advises that I was visitor number 45 - and that's only counting the ones who've been while he's been around. So that speaks volumes for the high regard Dave is held in by everyone.

I'll drop by and see him next week sometime, don't want to overload him at this sensitive time.

Thanks to those who let me know his surname so I could locate him!

I have an idea that will hopefully break up the "eternities" for him .... and with the aid of my trusty side-kick Crazylittleshit....hopefully he will be amused for quite sometime ... although the idea needs him to be out of ICU ... until then I think I might just go and visit him tomorrow

C you again real soon Dave gentle-

I meet the 'other 2' riders

Couldn't believe it when I came across a red VTR1000 and red/white/blue NC style Honda 250 out riding together this arvo. l stopped and sure enough they were the two that were riding behind VTWIN when Dave crashed. It turns out they did stop, checked on Dave and left when the ambo arrived. At the time they were (and still are) upset by what they saw. They have been in to see the Police after reading the request in the paper. Unfortunately they were ahead of Dave and just like VTWIN they didn't see what caused him to go into the railing. They recall he was not speeding but they had to brake fairly hard for the traffic backing up, then they heard a bang and saw the R1 going along the railing past them with no rider on it.
Good to hear they came forward anyway.

I know it sounds funny, but I'm glad to hear that Dave is feeling bored. He must be on the mend again. The patients that are quiet and not bored are the one's that worried me most.

But a hideous phonetic attempt at Dave's surname
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

CSL and I called in to see Dave after the Martinborough ride yesterday. Mr and Mrs Skunk were there also, they brought in a nice basket of goodies for Andre and Sheila - well done guys.
Dave was looking noticably better and they told us they thought he will be out of icu today or tomorrow.
