Fuck. This is on MY home turf...Less than a mile from my house.
First I heard of this was when Frosty called me to see if I was okay.
Luckily, I've been out at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary with the kids. Unluckily I had to wait until I got home to read this.
We drove by the accident site about 1.55 pm and I commented on the sand on the road, but didn't think it could have been a bike.
Strange about the right hand side of the bridge being hit. I can't work it out.
Normally people just go straight ahead and hit the other side. Although Dave won't remember a bloody thing about the accident I bet.
Extra prayers for you tonight buddy. KIa Kaha. Pity you'll miss the rugby (PT).
Warning to other bikers. They've put sand down over the oil slick. That bridge is gonna be dodgy as for the next day or two.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

Be strong VTWIN. I've seen 5 riders come off right in front of me on separate occasions, and been at the scene of about 8 accidents on KB rides since I've been a member here, so I know it's quite a shock!Originally Posted by VTWIN

Thinking of you Stonechucker, keep positive everyone
Repect the truth - The Matrix is life, not a movie .......
Sounds like maybe he's lost the back end on the slippery corner and then shot across to the other side and hit the bridge railing - then one can only say it was a miracle he never had a head-on with a car as that is usually a pretty busy road.Originally Posted by riffer

But the only time that corner is slippery is when there's black ice or fresh rain, or diesel.
It didn't rain here until 4.00, its at least 10° and there's no diesel that I can see on the road. I had a damn good look on the way home.
Coming the other way there's a decent bump that can throw you offline if you aren't expecting it, but not coming from the north.
Unless you're coming on to the corner way too hot.
But Dave should know this bridge like the back of his hand by now. He only lives 5 minutes away at the most...
Still scratching my head...

Thats really terrible news. I hope you're ok and make a speedy recovery Dave.
Whoever gets the next update please make sure you post it here asap! At least he's def not going to die eh? I'm assuming. Mate, this sucks!!!

Mate, not your fault, this is the way it is and no one can change it. I'v talked many people into going on rides as we all do and 99.9% of the time we love it. He would have been kicking himself if he didnt go.
Hope hes back in the saddle soon.
Our thoughts are with you

Does the R1 have a sharp kick in the powerband that could have sent the rear wheel heading to the right barrier?
How did it happen? I know the bridge isn't the flashest piece of engineering - but how did he manage to hit the barrier....on a bike you have heaps of room???
Saw Dave & Bruce returning from their ride over the hill as Viv & I were going to Martinborough. This has come as a bit of a shock as Dave is not a fast rider and does not take risks. We came back thru the accident scene, everything was cleaned up but still plenty of police doing their thing, did not think the road was slippery but it was bloody cold, would be interested to find out what happened.
Dave all the best & Bruce shit happens.
If you're not living on the edge you're not leaning over far enough
Not that would do this. It just doesn't make sense...Originally Posted by alarumba

Besides my earlier comment about perhaps he lost the back end another possibility could be maybe he clipped a car that was taking up too much room.
Cheers

Thank God........ any more news on Dave??Originally Posted by Hitcher
Unfortunately these things happen and can't be helped. Thoughts and wishes there and hope you pull through ok Stonechucker.
Hmmm Dave is always a very safe rider. Would be unusual for him to get that close to a car.Originally Posted by merv

edited by request, also to say it was not a lecture. just a reminder to not ever assume anything on the roads.
either way, he will live. theres too many folks willing for him to do so.

the really happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery when on a detour.
I have met Dave a few times and he is a good man. We both had new R1s and looks like we have both written em off. Unfortunatley he came off worse. Good luck to you mate am thinking of you.
ahhh... hell why not might have another for ya Stonie get well soon![]()

Dave went into theatre about 2hrs ago.
It has me scratching my head wot happened.
Road was clean
Plenty of grip
Wasn't dark or wet
Dave being the rider that he is rules out speed....plus you could see the traffic banking up cause there was a fucking tractor on the bridge doing 30-40 kms on a state highway.
Leading up to the bridge I could see all the traffic so I slowed down to 70-80km. As I entered the bridge I had to do some heavy braking because of the tractor ahead......That's when I heard the BANG.
Like I said you could see the traffic banking up and the road was good.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy
My thoughts go out to SC and his family.
we will just need to wait until he comes out of the op to find out?Originally Posted by VTWIN

Hi VTwin, Sorry to hear mate and good luck to Dave coming through theatre.
I chatted you today at WMCC, which one was Dave? What jacket does he wear? Hope you are doing OK mate. It's always so tragic hearing such things and what makes it worst is when it's such a responsible rider involved.
Thoughts with you both!!!
Vtwin he wasn't wearing Just jeans again was he?![]()

maybe something went wrong with the bike??? maybe the wheel locked up through the corner or something because from what people have said we can rule out road conditions...and his riding ...i would say only thing left is something went wrong with the bike?
Mmmmm I wonder what Dave will get once he's back to 100%.
Maybe this...![]()

Maybe he'll follow the current crowd and get a sexy 636.
Hopefully the thought of shopping and then breaking in a new baby will help him over the coming weeks.

Unfortunately people make mistakes and accidents happen - its a case of being human. It's also why ACC exists at all.
I think it would be more appropriate to put positive talk here rather than trying to suss the cause of the accident right now - I'm sure when he gets back online he doesn't want to read all your messages of WHAT WENT WRONG!!! especially if it just was a bad call, which we all know being motorcyclists ourselves can happen even with the most experience.
Our thoughts go to his friends and family right now in this very difficult time from Chic 'n' Charge and Stevo.![]()
Dave - be strong mate and hang in there. Things will be rough but the good times will return - especially with the knowledge you have so many friends thinking of you. Take care. :spudwave:
Be safe - be seen - be happy

guys can we leave worrying about wot caused it till we hear about Dave.
I want the man himself to explain it to me
To see a life newly created. To watch it grow and prosper. Isn't that the greatest gift a human being can be given?
ok then ill shut up ....get well soon dave
Thoughts and prayers to you SC.
All the best Dave, you'll do fine and be able to tell us yourself what went wrong.
Bruce, Relax mate... there is nothing you could have done to control the situation. We all ride in the knowledge that we have to be aware of everything that is going on around us and act and react appropriately.
Shit happens, aslong as he is in one piece, it is all that matters.
Shit!Hang in there, big guy.....
He'll be the first biker in history to remember what went wrong then.Originally Posted by FROSTY
