My undertsanding is that ICU each patient has a full time nurse (ie one nurse per patient) , more or less. Whereas general ward it's a nurse or two per ward. So they can monitor things much more closely in ICU.

I'm hoping anyway, so I'll run with that theory until I hear something definately bad.

Thougts and prayers . And other suchlike stuff.

Yes it is very common to be yo-yo'd back and forth a bit in the early days of treatment, especially since Dave has had Cardiac surgery and was in an orthapedic ward. Unfortunately hospital staff dont prep you for this (they keep telling you the good stuff that you need to hear!) I discussed this briefly with Daves folks on monday, so hopefully it wont come as too much of a shock.

Cheers for the update VTWIN, keep em coming.

At least in ICU dave wont have a TV so he wont need to watch any of the crappy rugby thats been played lately

Thoughts are with you Dave. Get well soon buddy.

For Daves Mum and Dad: you've probably sussed this already, but if the hospital Dave is in operates anything like Christchurch central you will be wise to only listen to the head of the various departments/ teams that are looking after Dave. By this I means the surgeon or specialist that leads the gaggle of people around.

I'm a fairly regular customer of the health system, and I've been in there with sick relatives etc as well. Invariably a well meaning house surgeon/ registrar or whatever will come along and confidently tell you "this is whats wrong......, this is what we are going to do........". And more often than not they get it wrong.

This can lead to an all day emotional rollercoaster ride....once when I was in hospital there was this diabetic chap across the room that had a toe that was turning black. The house surgeon, registrar and locumn had all been popping in to share their vast knowledge of what was going to happen. I kid you not when, all in the space of a couple of hours, he was told that the toe needed to be amputated. Then it was the foot. Then it was the leg just below the knee. Then it was the leg halfway up the thigh. Then finally at the end of the day the SURGEON came in and said that they may be able to save the toe, but if not that would be all that was amputated.

So please, be very selective about who you listen to!

Dave's mum's a nurse which would help them understand what's going on. Must make it a little bit easier than if they were new to the whole system.
