Always seems to be covered in shit though. Loose gravel left over from road works, current road works and a bit of mud thrown here and there.
The road from Ngaruawahia to Whatawhata isn't entirely bad. A lot faster with some nice corners and a lot less physically and mentally draining than other road.

Ohautira Rd through to Te Uku has a real bumpy section in the middle. It used to be a km or so of gravel, then they sealed, then it slumped. Now its real fun on bikes with proper suspension (read dual purpose / supermoto). Take that patch with ease, the drops and rises measure in inches, and you should be fine. I love the road.
