How hard to find parts for older bikes?

Hey all,

(Bubbling with questions this newb )

Looking for my first bike and started wondering if something goes wrong with say a 1989-92 bike (mechanical/suspension-wise), would I be able to get most parts (i.e. gaskets, seals, bearings, bushes, shims, valves)? Just your standard GSXs, ZXRs, CBRs.

Or is it simply not worth it and one just needs to hope that nothing goes wrong with whatever he buys. Or another option, if valve burned - replace the engine?

Just for the sake of it couple of days ago I called Cycletreads and asked for a carb rebuild kit for a '91 MC22 and was told that their suppliers don't offer any

Thanks, it was just something I figured very likely to be needed. But seeing that it is rather reasonably priced and easily available makes me feel better

So it's mainly from on-line suppliers that people get their parts as opposed to walking into a ... BnT? Are there actually any motorcycle parts-only stores around?

I get bits for my 30 year old yamaha from the yamaha dealer, so far no probs.

If you're keen on an MC22 CBR250RR then I'd definitely suggest looking through this website forum, I've found it very useful for tips and tricks for my bike.

Ive got a family of early 80's kwakas, no real problem getting parts. 'nuf of them were made that manufacturers have stockpiles of bits. Can be a little pricey to buy in from US or UK, but still cheaper than anything locals can supply.

Talk to bike wreckers, _STAIN_ here in kb knows shit loads of stuff about old jappers. Look him up, his contact details are on his profile.

Parts that were less than ideal can be difficult to find e.g. zxr250c rear shocks but if you ask the right people the right questions they can point you towards alternatives or after market parts that are often better

Rebuild stuff you can usually source yourself or a bikeshop can do it for you, replacing full parts is slightly different, some things such as rear shocks and all can be a bit of a hassle but you can sometimes get away with a suspension mod so you can fit another bikes rear shock etc, but realisticly you dont want to sink money into a 250, so if your looking at bikes that need this and that done to it, your gonna find its a money pit and when you go to resell you wont make any money on it.

Yeah but I didnt sink any money into mine that wasnt needed, and there wasnt a whole lot that I spent money on, a New screen, after market mirrors, a rattle can of metal flake blue, oil + filter x2 and tyres, And an endless supply of cleaning products

Never had any probs getting bits for my 20 yr old cbr from the Welly / Hutt bike shops.

bearings and shims and seals etc are piss easy, you go to bearing/seal suppliers and order them based on size. take the old ones in, its rarely a problem at all.
