    Death Valley Originals

Met an interesting young chap named Dave yesterday who's literally just finished his chopper and is on his way to the bike show in New Plymouth for the weekend. Unfortunately, I can't upload images from my phone for some reason but let me assure you, this bike (don't know if it has a name) is fairly unique to NZ.

Firstly, there's not a a whole lot of "off the shelf" parts on it. Over the past two years, Dave has hand made everything including the frame, tank, springer front end, bars the works. The bike looks like an unfinished, "dummy assembled" bike awiting paint but is in fact fully running and ready to ride.

The bars look like a couple of bits of steel pipe. No levers or switch blocks. Closer inspection shows the r/h bar end twists, fully internal throttle mechanism and cable. The frame, seat, bars, front end and tank are unpainted. The 30 cm long, unslienced header pipes are hand made and invlove over 45 welded sections. He reckons 200 hours to build the front end along.

Dave's aggreed to kindly let us display his bike for a bit when he gets back from the show so I'll post some pics.

Really, it's very cool to see a proper bike fabricator right here in Wellington and a tallented one at that.

Good luck for the show Dave.

Saw this at the expo today. An interesting look and a real piece of art. Was a little concerned about sliding off the back of the steel saddle seat straight onto the rear tyre. Put a whole new meaning to the term skid marks

Thanks for putting pics up Scott. Jimmy has been going on and on and on about this bike, and it did sound pretty cool, but looks way better than my imagination could conjure up. Those header pipes are fucken cool.

Yes it is a good bike I judged the show so we had a good look over it to see what had changed from 2 years before,it didn't place this year but I'm sure dave will hopefully get it finished this year.As a sidenote it's f**king hard judging shows as some entrants look at the competition and think there bike is head and shoulders above everybodies elses and when they don't place they think the judges don't know what they are doing I personably have judged this show 7 times with a range of people who are all good in there respective fields and it takes a good couple of days to sort it out and we don't get paid for it we do it because we love customized bikes.

Good on ya Doug, I hope to be able to enter the show one day myself. Shit of a job trying to sort out which bikes are "best" I'd imagine.

Ummmm, no lights, indicators, fenders, number plate, muffler or speedo. Somehow I doubt it......

Yea Doug tuff job ... Had heaps of people that saw my Aprilia sitting outside coming up to me & ask why it wasn't in the show as there was nothing like it there , keep asking myself that each year I don't put it in lol , had even more guys asking me if they could take pics of my 79 TT 500 that I took there with my youngest boy on the back the following day . The crew I ride with will be putting in all our bike the next show so at least there should be 12+ more there .
