Kiwirider is a good read, but one thing I'd personally like to see would be a Motorcycle road guide tour type section/blog. Outlining sweet routes to travel around NZ. For example the best/enjoyable route to get from Wellington to Auckland, or Hawkes bay to New Plymouth.
I am pretty bad when it comes to travelling and usually take state highways which are dead boring. So something like this would be extremely beneficial to new travellers like myself.
Just a hint.
(I'd even subscribe if it had this!)
White Trash Pearls of Wisdom #2654 - Refering to yourself in the 3rd person: The only thing gayer, would be being caught handcuffed around a public toilet bowl, an apple stuffed in your mouth and George Michael administering an epic caneing to your exposed cheeks while Boy George documents the event on a handicam.
Thanks - I'll pass it on.
To make it a regular thing we'd need some reader input as well - for which we pay. Base price is $150 for 600 words and three hires pics - for items published in the mag.
It's something we should do more of online too - then we can google map it.
One option to tide you over until KR does something like that is to read ride reviews, or the posts of regular bloggers if they are out riding. You soon pick up on the regularly mentioned roads and begin to know where they all are. I know, because that's how I learnt.
The best way however, is to go for a ride. Go explore. Ride roads you've never ridden, and you'll soon find the gems (and have a bunch of adventures on the unsealed ones)![]()

IMO just get out there with a full tank of gas, and the attitude, of "I wonder where that road goes." Even if it goes nowhere, you can always turn around and come back out. NZ roads are very well signposted. I may not always know exactly where I am, but I seldom get lost.
If you are in unfamiliar territory always take note of the road names you go down, in case
- You need to navigate back
- you want to do the road again
- you want to write up a great trip report
- you come to grief and need help, like my unnamed friend.

We have done a featured ride page in the past. I did half a dozen 'roads to ride' and my 'Top 10' , but I ran out of photo collateral.
Racing Dave has done several too.
Well, usually around here after criss-crossing and doubling back enough times I find an interection with a main road that will say 'x hicktown this way, y hicktown that way'
Then I have to make a call as to which one will have an open gas station, and which one I will reach with what I think I have left in the tank. It pays to have a passing acquaintance with the general layout of NZ towns.
