Trying to sell stuff on trademe so listed a couple of mountain bikes cheap. One sold within hours the other took longer and eventually went to a last minute bidder in napier (reserve was met beforehand). Auction said pick up only (hamilton) and the guy had one negative feedback for another last minute bid that he did not want in the end which got me a bit suspicious.

Surprisingly he paid me and arranged shipping and the bike was sent so i was happy. Turns out i had listed it as 27 speed instead of 21. Simple typo wasn't intending on misleading anyone. He wanted a 27 speed for a project. At no stage did he ask any questions about the bike.

Now im pissed off.

What should i do? I am holding back on telling the guy to fuck off as it was my fault for listing it incorrectly (accidently) but his fault for not asking any questions and ignoring the pick up only.

Will advise him that he can send the bike back to me at his cost for a refund. Or he can simply list on trademe himself he should easily make more than what he paid.

Think of it this way. Say you were buying the item and it was important to you the motorcycle had a 6 speed and not 5 speed box. The seller says pick up only, but you both agree to ship at your expense.

You get the motorcycle to find it is only a 5 speed. The seller offers a refund.

Who should be out of pocket for freight?

You could argue if it was pick up only, you wouldn't refund the person's petrol to pick it up the first time. However you made the advertising mistake - which means you bare the cost of it.

Ask the guy to re-list it on your behalf, after the auction has finished if he's still out of pocket refund the difference including freight. If he makes more money on-selling it good luck to him.
