Road marker posts

I was talking to half a dozen guys today about road marker posts. None of them knew what the different colours / patches mean, two of them didn't know they had any meaning at all.

Is this common? If so why? Is it not covered in the usual licence training literature? Several times over the years I've found that I can't see the road but the post tells me where it is.

25 MTRS apart on real windy bits,50 mtrs apart on not so windy bits and 100 mtrs apart on straight bits. Usefull to know what colors are on wich side of bridge too.

At night if the ones on your right have two reflectors it indicates you're approaching a left-hand bend. FYI.

also if the posts fuck off leftwards, signifies the same. Tbh I couldn't tell you what he idfferent colors etc mean either. I do remember it being in the test, but I guess the roads I travel are visible enough that I have never used the information afterwards.

Don't treat them as gospel tho... I've noticed sometimes they aren't completely accurate.

Common knowledge... probably not? It's not really covered in the license questions, and I've even had some car drivers react with surprise that there are no street lights in the country at night.

If you ride close enough, you can hold your left hand out and make a thud thud thud sound if you slap them as you go past...

nah just joking, I knew about what scummy said but I dont recall reading anything about them in the road code

I thought the differet colours related to how many points you get when you hit them with your handgaurds.

Tbh I couldn't tell you what he idfferent colors etc mean either.

I recall being completely disoriented by a solid layer of fog over a road. There was a single post maybe 20M in front of me. Exactly in front. It had two yellow reflectors, so I scrubbed off a bunch of speed and eased left.

I just assumed it was commomn knowledge.

I just slow down for fog, you never know what non-reflective objects might be hiding in there.

They are double sided - the left hand ones are on the left hand side,and the right hand ones on the right hand side.The really tricky thing is,and I don't know how they do this...but when you are going the other way,they are still the same...left on the left hand side,right on the right hand side.I'm sure some of the knowledgeable people on this site will explain it to me.

Haha, should tried this years ago when they were made of wood......It Hurt I tell ya.

It did happen once. Hit a few flimsy ones, then lined up another one on a tight lefthand uphill and hit it squarely with the left handguard. Fcuken thing was solid wood and concreted in. Caused major countersteer issue which forced me onto the wrong side of the road, luckily I managed to stay on but knackered my knee when I put my foot down.

A bit more wary now.

You had to be there.

I'd just come out of a long sweeper, could see over the ground beside it but on coming out of it I realised the ground for about 100M was hiding.
