I know it is not an ADV bike, but help required please

    G'day,
My mate died 9 months or so ago from the big C, he had a wee GN250 which hasn't been ridden for going on two years now. His wife has just (can finally face it) got the neighbour to try and start it before TMing it - he has tried but reckons it keeps blowing fa fuse????
I went round this afternoon and put the battery on charge and going to go round tomorrow to have a look, any ideas (I don't want to forget anything simple, not saying you guys are simple........just that ........... I'll take my foot out of my mouth now)?
Or should I look in the cruiser section (what if someone saw me )
    Thanks, Crim

What fuse? If he is trying to jump start, has he got his positive and negative around the right way? The master link will blow immediately if he has got them mixed up. I usually connect positive to the battery and negative to the frame somewhere. Then see if the starter works. Take an automotive 30 amp fuse (may be 20 ) with you in case he has popped it. Apart from that, they are super simple so have clean fuel, drain old fuel from carb as well, charge the battery if it will take a charge, check the oil level to make sure there has been no tank seepage and don't try to jump it with the car motor running.

Good luck and my sympathies to her.

Well it does have the DR250 engine...

So it could be considered the road biased version of the DR.

We had a few SR250's pass through our house when the boys were learning, almost the same bike, I am sure they thought they were adventure bikes

They actually went really well on the gravel

I had a similar problem on someone elses GN I was borrowing. If you can clean the contacts in the switches on the bars and make sure the wiring behind the headlamp is dry... If like me you do not have time drain the bowl and push start her with nothing else turned on just the engine. Let her get up to operating temp then use one swithc at a time until it either stalls or blows the fuse. There is your wet circuit. If nothing shorts it out give the starter and solenoid a good clean.

If she won't start check the CDI.

    Basics to check first:
    • Is the hot wire to the starter contacting the frame?

    • If you lean the bike over does water run out?

    • Most of your wiring is behind the headlight, is anything living there?

    • Check the tail light too, that has a real habit of leaking.
