Maybe your onto something it with a classic?
I know they have a price outside of purely money, but its still riding for riding sake.

I haven't paid the rego and don't intend to. Although I ride very early in the morning and very late at night. Haven't been pulled up yet, but did do a breathalyzer test and they didn't even check!

57 years, thats impressive, bet you have some great memories and stories. Classics are just over a hundred to register....my choice would be a BMW or Honda for 1971 or earlier.

Still beats given it to the rich IHMO. Best option is for the money to be given to me but shit I'm a middle earn white male so I'm screwed.

But I like your suggestion of the Classic, Oldrider's name would then be doubly appropriate and it would be a shame for him to be forced give up riding.

Sorry to hear this John, I know things are tough on a fixed income.

Frankly the Guzzi has been on hold for a bit and we use the triumph more (classic reg) but its not quite your cup o tea and far from ideal given the distances you need to travel.

What about swapping it for a trail bike and trailering it to your nearest gravel road? Again, not ideal... I have to say I'm bogging myself wondering WTF we will do upon retirement...

Thank you all for your kind messages and support!

Your support and sympathy on this has been touching and overwhelming and I thank you all sincerely!

There are however other contributing circumstances involved that influence our decision.

    We own three vehicles.

Our private car .. a wee Pajero iO 4x4, this is essential.

Our wee Toyota Townace 2 litre Diesel 4x4 dump truck .. (the most expensive to register @ just under $600.00)

We use the truck in most of our other hobbies and recreational pursuits. (Firewood, growing olive trees and gold prospecting)

Our motorcycle .. 2007 Triumph Tiger 955i .. My preferred first choice vehicle and now Mrs O's second choice as we are getting older.

The tiger is an excellent all round bike but I am shrinking with age and finding it a bit tall mainly when having to stop so I lowered the front forks 18mm to compensate.

This has altered the handling at low speeds so I need to lower the rear suspension to match, more $$$$

Our gear is getting older more $$$$$ to replace!

Trading down to a lesser bike does not appeal to me and will still cost $$$ anyway!

Physical personal deterioration means we have to plan our journey around toilet stops etc and means that motorcycling is becoming less practical for us as a couple.

We have to get a lot of exercise to remain fit enough to be able to ride the bike competently and safely and we get that from walking and shovelling cutting wood etc. (read, hard work)

So you can see the way that our activities have become prioritised and now with the exorbitant ACC charges added onto everything, something had to go!

Reluctantly we have decided that the motorcycle is the one!

Realisticly we or I only have a few years of motorcycling left but I wanted to be able to make that choice myself, not to be falsely dictated to by the likes of ACC and Nick Smith!

I am possibly guilty of trying to solicit personal sympathy by petulantly posting of my disappointment of this state of affairs and I apologise if it looks like that but I am just so pissed off at the way this has been dishonestly and prematurely forced upon us!

Thank you all again for your concern and support, enjoy your own bikes and ride safely.

Meanwhile there is a very tidy Tiger with lodes of extras and riding gear sitting in the shed waiting for an enthusiast to claim it!

    Cheers, John and Pip Oldrider.

    Oldrider,

I sort of know how you're feeling, even though you'd been riding for 32 years before my mummy had me!
You see, I'm currently waiting for diagnosis on a rather painful back problem that has been persisting for some months now, making it too painful to ride my gorgeous bike - I've tried a few times and paid for it for days afterwards!
My rego runs out on the 24th and the hold has already been arranged for the next 3 months (I'm still holding out a little hope that I'll be ready to ride again that soon!)
While I'm sad that I can't ride, I also know that riding in winter is not that fun a lot of the time anyway, doubly so down your way I assume? Perhaps you can become a fair weather rider and only register your bike in the summer?

    What money?

Ah, the money that rich people pay in taxes. Where does all this magic money come from?

With a country rate of earning at minus .25 billion per week, we are doing well aren't we

Perhaps tomorrow may motivate a few to start earning rather than draining. Just my moan.

It seems Oldrider has more than ACC worries. I suppose it hits us all, but I hope it hits me a lot later. There are some things I can wait for.

Well, it was nice riding with you John - at least we had the chance to do that eh!

By chance my old man has decided today that he won't drive anymore due to his failing eye-sight. (He's 85)

A big change for you both huh!

    My thoughts too ....

Rego can be bought in ONE months ... on hold means ...when you WANT too ... you can ...

Bit over $10 a week for rego - put it on hold over winter if you like and make it cheaper.

Nothing cheap about motorcycles but I'd rather spend my money there than pissing it away in the pub each night or sucking it down a lung.

Still regardless it is a sorry day when anyone hangs up the helmet.
