I almost smoked a biker today...

Today i was driving home as you do when I was waiting to turn in to a side st I waited for all the cars then just as I started going I saw a biker I missed him by inches? He was riding to the far left. I was told your meant to ride as close to the center line without puttung yourself in harms way. How often do you see this?

i drew a mind map, so i get a funny feeling he had more chances to be seen by you in the left side, rather then right. kinda lost and confused here.

Sounds like a classic SMIDNSY issue. A bike can ride whereever it wants to within a lane. There is no prescribed "proper" place. It really depends what you are doing.

Take your time to REALLY look for bikes, before you turn.

He was probably trying to put more space between himself and your car in case you tried turning in front of him.

I was on the bike last weekend and found myself in the same situation as your almost-smoked-biker. It made me realise that I need to be more aware of my surroundings and I should have moved into the right wheel track of my lane to increase my visibility. I don't like riding the centre line for some subconscious reason, may bee too many stains & rainbows?.

Harumph, and there's me been thinking all this time that it was only 'cage' drivers and never a biker (even if in a 'cage') that made that mistake, silly old me...

Apparently you should "technically" ride in the position of the car driver in front of you for maximum visibility. I tend to wander side to side so I am certain they HAVE seen me. I see the benefit of that in a steady stream of traffic, but frankly I am going to put myself in a place where I can see what is going on in front of me, as well as being seen by the blind driver up front. Lets not forget the cars behind you either, you need eyes in the back of your head too.

Oncoming traffic has to be watched with eagle eyes. My commute involves many intersections, with a large flush median for people to use. I use it and people turn in front of me. I see them coming (or observe the cars to my left yeilding to them, so they can turn) and adjust my speed accordingly. I go at a speed that I can stop immediately someone turns accross my path. I am still travelling faster than the stopped traffic alongside me.

I nearly killed myself last week: answered my cell phone while driving, talking away (work call.... stupid work). T intersection, me turning left. I stop, clock the big fucking truck approaching from my right, see the flashy light, and assume (theres that word....) he is turning left. Not so much, as I pull out I notice he has all his flashy lights on, because it is a BIG truck with a large OVERSIZE MOTHERFUCKER GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY SIGN. on it. stopped and he goes in front of me.

turn off phone when driving now. its a bad look.
