    Seat modifications

Did my first decent ride on Sunday. Enjoyed it but after a couple of hours my tailbone was starting to tell me it had had enough.

The seat is a single bum style ( Dragstar xvs 650 )
The seat feels like I'm sitting on the rear which tends to slope forward. I reckon it needs the flat / front of the seat built up a bit.

Has anyone found they needed to build up their seat? If so, who specialises in bike seats? Thanks.

There are after market seats you can get, ask your dealer what is available

Did my California seat for the same reason, any Auto trimmer / upholsterer can do it.

One thing you need to be aware of, it will raise the COG and affect the handling.

This probably wont be an issue for you, but be really aware of altering the height of a bike seat for comfort or what have you. It can raise the overall height of the bike making it near on impossible to reach the ground DAMHIK.

Did the same a while back, bit of $5 foam from para rubber, bread knife, some glue, and a staple gun required. Instructions are pretty self explanatory, I reused the vinyl cos it had stitching on it, if not, you may as well get new stuff there too.

a long ride will do that to you. If you have access to a staplegun and an offcut of leather and some foam, its pretty easy to recover your own seat. a saddlery or something would probably supply you with an offcut large enough for a few bucks.

I have this week off work so might run over to Tauranga and check out McDonalds. They seem to have a good name for modified seats.

I did cut out a seat shape from ply, and made up mounting brackets. Felt quite good as it doesn't slope down rearward. I might even cover it and just try it to see how it pans out. Cant lose anything by having a go.

A good marine upholsterer should be able to reshape and recover any motorcycle seat. I've had mine done in a marine vinyl (leather look) used on yachts, and beforehand got him to chalk in modifications to the insides to reshape.
