Queen's Birthday South Island ADV Ride

Queen's Birthday South Island ADV Ride - Info Post

All the details for the ride will be updated here so check back as more details come to hand...

    The route

DAY 1 > Sat 4th: Meet at Maruia at 10:30. First run up Station Creek 4X4 track. Access permission has been sorted, it is $15 per rider. Return trip and maybe a look-see around Coal Creek 4X4 tracks etc. Then into Reefton to fuel up, food up, head to Big River Road. Look-see around winding Shed, Poppet Head with a couple of challenging hill climbs for those who dare to defy gravity. Stay at Big River Hut night #1 at a cost of $5.10 for DOC hut tickets, I'll pick these up and bring them along

    Day #1 costs (other than fuel/food/etc): $20

DAY 2 > Sun 5th: Return trip from Big River, include additional nearby track(s) (a few to choose from), then to Reefton to fuel up, food up. Head to Napoleons hill, JATZ has sorted access permission and is the standard $10 per rider. After that onto No Name rd (maybe something else if time allows). For accommodation on night #2 we have a 2 bedroom unit with 4 single beds and fold out divan booked at Ross Motels able to sleep up tp 6, tarrif is $100 for 2 people plus $15 extra person so we are looking at $29 each for the 5 confirmed so far

    Day #2 costs (other than fuel/food/etc): $39

DAY 3 > Mon 6th: Mt Greenland (maybe something else if time allows) then home…

    Day #3 costs (other than fuel/food/etc): $0

    The riders

Please let us know if you intend to come along so we know what numbers to deal with, if you are avoiding something like IRD payments and don't want to be listed in a public forum then no problems, just shoot me or JATZ a PM, cheers

Re your post on froggies thread. Sorry J can't do. We are already in the middle of renovating another room and last weekend discovered our roof is leaking - wet gib and plaster damn it. I've got a fair bit of work to do around home at the moment. QBWE doesn't work for me either.

Cheers for the PM Ryan, we'll catch up soon enough

Just finished this article today on the Waitahu River Track which could be an addition to the route, plus the possibility of using the Montgomerie Hut at the end for accommodation for one of the nights.

In saying that, the Big River Hut is pretty awesome too so that could also be an option, plenty of options around that area thats for sure...

    Looks good so far.
    Hmmm...
Comfy armchair with big tank and knobs on or lightweight 3 legged wooden stool with a piddly tank?

Haven't taken the TT on a big ride yet...

Bugger, I'm out for QB weekend as well, rostered on to work all weekend, but on a positive note, the $$ will be handy for next trip.
I've been talking to a workmate ex Hokitika who has pointed out a couple of tracks to me, including the Mt Greenland track and another one up Pigeon hill (Falls Creek Rd).
Going by Google Earth images, Totara Valley Rd could be worth a look at too, and Mt Rangitoto track off Happy Valley Rd looks to be a nice snotty hill climb.

That's fine. We'll just take photos and point out where you would have fallen off.

You may find you fall off a lot more this way though

Thats a shame Kenny, I was hoping you'd be able to make this one, its been a while since we've both been out on the same ride. But at least you're getting the surgery over and done with, and hopefully once you're all healed up you'll cut back on the bloody whinging

Been giving it a bit of thought today...
Sat 4th Lake Daniels, Big River and stay in hut there
Sun 5th Napoleons hill, and No Name rd, maybe something else if time allows, and down to Ross
Mon 6th Mt Greenland and home ?

    Thoughts, other options ?

That be a good one. Did it a couple of weeks ago.

I place the green hut at 42°10'43.03"S 171°50'7.15"E i.e. 2 degrees further south and not out in the "ditch".

Yeah, I'd need a bigger tank and pontoons for the "other one"...

That sounds like a really good run JATZ, I'm in the middle of doing some more research on some other nearby tracks and will bring GPS info along in the case of something not coming together (eg weather issues for Napoleons hill) but all in all I think you have nailed a really good ride, looking forward to it
