There are two kinds of adventurers: those who go truly hoping to find adventure and those who go secretly hoping they won't. We should come home from our adventures having faced their perils and uncertainties, endured their discomfort and beaten the odds, with a sly acknowledgment and revitalised solidarity of character.
I like the way those big tanks make the XR's look too.

What do you southern guys recommend for a 650 to get thru all the challenge bits successfully? I've not seen the gnarly bits - would knobblier tyres make a great deal of difference more than E07s? Is it traction on muddy surfaces, loose clayey stones, or largeish ruts/ rocks that are the problem?

What ya mean. I've taken a 950 Adv through all of it (twice or more) with a half worn E-07 rear and well worn D606 front.
The challenge south of Kurow is mostly loose rock. There is some silt/clay mixed with rock on part of the hill climb and just pure silt/clay across some of the flats. Should all be ridable with E07 even in the wet though obviously slower in the wet. North of Lawrence is a bunch of silt/clay with ruts ranging from shallow to footpeg depth that was generally wet last year. Few had some fun in this and knobblies would be a help but the km's of this isn't huge.
There is a bit of every surface in this ride but it is mostly gravel/rock. Your choice re tyres but if you want the all round traction but not best anywhere a E09 or similar but if you prefer to use a E07 or simiar then that will do the trick as well. I'm using a Mitas C-17 front and C-02 rear this year but I'm riding a bike that doesn't weight much (anything) and is kinda fun with a bit of traction.

Lets import a container of them!
Guys check this out. Pre made roll chart holder for sale at Torpedo 7. Need to measure old roll chart to check if it would fit. I can provide an A5 wide (about 3x the width) version of the roll chart that will fit for width.
Seems it mounts to handle bar brace bar (top bar).

Looks like a good thing,
If you made a wider chart would the print be bigger ?
The only problem I have with the small one is being able to focus my worn out old eyes on the print.
Last year Ryan sent us the .rbf file so we could make wider scrolls with bigger text and room for extra notes. It was good to be able to read it more easily, and not load Ryan with yet another task. If we can do this again for 2012 then its easy to share with anyone that uses a wider roadbook.
