This is a good site for fairly accurate weather forecasts ...

When life throws you a curve ... Lean into it ...
Howdy folks, I'm back! I had to trim a couple of days off the trip due to completely chewing out my rear tyre, I may have been a little too generous on the throttleAside from that I've had 3 weeks of riding and fishing with not one day of rain to speak of, unbelievably brilliant! A few days for maintenance, re-prep the bike and head off again kicking straight into the DB1K, can't wait!
I just rode a good portion of the DB1K challenge sections on the way back up, through Mt Buster to Walking Spur, Manuherikia West Branch and as always a fantastic ride with stunning views. For those that have not yet done this run you are in for a treat, a real treat. Walking Spur has definitely seen a lot of 4X4 traffic through the summer months and compacted some of the loose rock sections near Johnstones Creek but don’t be fooled that it is going to be easy, there are still plenty of gnarly loose rocky sections to tackle! Manuherikia water levels are surprisingly high considering the dry weather of late, the following article may be handy for getting through the water sections trouble free:
Link > Plumbing carburettors for deep water crossings
Well yes indeedy I did read that just before I posted so up ya bumI know you can get normal sized ones but was after a small one I have seen on other bikes
Hey Josh. Good to hear you're safe & bike's ok. Are any of the crossings on the non- challenge sections very high do you know? I take it since there hasn't been much rain down there they should be pretty dry?
In life as in dance Grace glides on blistered feet
The bike is running really well, pros and cons as you get with all adventure bikes, but impressed so far
Omarama locals and farmers from the Lake Benmore area claim they continued to receive rain where many other areas down south have missed it so at this stage the river levels are sitting a tad below where they were at the time of the DB1k 2011, nothing to cause any issue for the non-challenge sections. The only major I can think of is the single Manuherikia West Branch crossing to get up the Manuherikia East Branch. Pick the right line though and it will be all of only axle to 3/4 wheel deep
When did you cross it? We have had about 80mm of rain in Alex over last 2 days (thats about 20% of annual rainfall) and the Manuherikia has gone from ~2 cumecs to over 60 since yesterday morning. It should subside over the next 7 days but it will still be a lot higher than 2 days ago (and probably last year). I will check what the level it was last year at work on Monday.
3 days ago. I was fishing some backwater off Lake Benmore when a kick arse thunderstorm rolled in, watching well over 100 lightning flashes and thunder so strong it pounded your chest was an impressive way to end the day. A local said it didn't eventuate to much and that only 15mm fell in the area?? 80mmm eh, that's a decent dump, if that's the case the crossings may well be a little interesting
Who do you work for to have access to flow rates? It would be a great help to see them the day before the DB1K so we know what to expect... possible?
Current flows are available 24/7 here http://water.orc.govt.nz/WaterInfo/Default.aspx
As to who I work for, lets just say it involves 2 fairly large chunks of concrete and monitoring the river levels in this area fairly closely![]()
I'd be watching these two sites myself.
Rainfall http://water.orc.govt.nz/WaterInfo/S...x?s=TunnelHill
River flow http://water.orc.govt.nz/WaterInfo/Site.aspx?s=Beattie
Map of sites here
While Dunstan Creek is not the Manuherikia the catchments are pretty close. The flow meter on the Manuherikia at Ophir is likely to be affected by far more than our area of interest being further north west.
Other site to watch is this one http://ecan.govt.nz/services/online-...x?SiteNo=70902
Same river as the twin river crossings behind Waimate but one hell of a long way down stream with a huge catchment upstream of the flow recorder. The Haka river is probably more useful though obviously not the same river http://ecan.govt.nz/services/online-...x?SiteNo=71155
Re forecast charts I use these two pages.
First one is better of this far out as can see what is generally headding our way from south of Ausi.

Second page is better for getting the detail when getting closer to the date i.e. 5 or do days out
