Freak enduro accident

The media thrive on snipets of information like this and hopefully its just an incident that goes hand in hand with our sport.
Had the same thing happen today and that was to myself. Riding in trees does have its hazzards, so does high speed XC riding , MX etc etc.

Certainly wasn't an Enduro event and was just a trail ride.... in saying that there were some people that treated it like a race, with passing in area's that they shouldn't and just "in it for the win" - I am NOT saying this guys was as sounds like a freak accident.

Mates of mine that are really good riders were even noticing some of the riders being idiots.

BUT...it was a good event and not that many area's that this could happen.
Do hope he is ok though

I know media make up some crap and don't get facts right quite often but we were travelling back from Taupo and saw many of the sign/arrows to this event and they had various descriptions. Some had X Country Event, some Enduro Event and some Trail Ride so not even the organisers had it called only a Trail Ride. I'm guessing they've just reused their arrows from other events

Hi, I'm a reporter at the NZ Herald looking to get some background information on the event itself to make sure our info is up to date and accurate. I'd love to hear from anyone who attended the Kuratau trail rides and anything you can tell us about the conditions, the accident or the event itself.

As a point of interest, the accident was reported as an enduro event because that's the information that the Taupo Rescue Helicopter supplied. At this point there's very little other information available. Hence we'd love to hear from someone who was there to make sure the rest of the story is reported properly! Anyone who can help can contact me via private message or by email at conor.whitten@nzherald.co.nz

Was a great event all the tracks were well marked there were safety marshals around all the time, BIG thumbs up to the organizers and the loops were huge.

You have a point but the media classed it as a "race". I am not sure it is true trail/cross country or enduro as it is a bit of everything really and that is why we went back again this year and fair call on the signs maybe.

But to call it a race is a very big stretch, and given the previous comments that have been noted was what most of us were really pointing as the biggest mistake.

Being that most non bike riders call the sport I do motocross not realising that this is a particular style of riding it was easy for the media to assume. However with no points or trophies or top times to compete for, it does not meet any form of competition.

It turns out my partner knows of the guy (mate's bro in law) and he sounds like a really nice guy and it would have been a freak accident. As KTM boy noted these things can and do happen (rarely).

The trails were really well marked out, clear trail markers with heaps of marshalls and full briefing sheets given to every rider to confirm the marker meanings and rules of the event. Other riders were checking on me when I did need to stop. All round the orgainisers did a great job and we will be back again next year.

Regardless of what the media called it, I'm simply pointing out that the organisers called it 3 different names on 3 different signs that I saw on the one road.
Any yes accidents do happen its the risk we all take.
