Riding to garage with no WOF or rego?

Hey

What's the deal with riding to a garage without a WOF/Rego if you've got the bike booked in for a WOF?

There's some sketchy law in the UK that apparently says it's OK to ride with no MOT (WOF) if you're going to a garage where you've got it booked in. Could be complete myth.

Could anyone confirm if the same exists here? Can't find it on any authoritative site.

Gotta ride maybe about 20k but heaps of cops about down that road and bike has been running bad (got to get them to give it a check) so can't rule out a breakdown!!

Answer:
No. The only acceptable reason for driving your car would be to take it to the garage for a warrant of fitness test. The fine for an expired registration or WOF is $200. Visit the NZ Transport Agency website or call 0800 822 422 for more information.

Yeah that's good will take my mobile and the mechanic's number then I can just say "here ya go speak to the guy yourself" if I do get pulled up.

A direct trip to a place of repair or inspection is all. Anything like "I'm on my way to work, will take it for a WOF after work" will likely get you a ticket.

Nope won't be going far. I just finished partially rebuilding it myself so not keen on riding it too far till a pro has given it the tick

Funny, I did exactly this at about 1000 this morning......and was wondering on how safe I was - (I knew the bikes safe I look after it, but from a legal standpoint).

Yet again the VTNZ had no motorbike guys on, 5 times in a row now (I'm sure they just can't arsed) so sent me to some guys home garage who does it down the road.....I shit you not it's called Teko Automotive......lol.

Was bloody awesome, guy was really good, checked it over properly (much better than the VTNZ guys that ask ME what's what with the bike ) saw me straight away and it was done quick smart, yet checked better than the much longer VTNZ process.

Bloody good. Yeah I'm not gonna bother with VTNZ, motorbike-only garage down the road so will go there (anyone heard of Simons Motorbike Repairs). Spoke to the guy on the phone sounds pretty helpful.

I have no faith the the VTNZ in GLenfield- they gave my husbands bike a WOF - I saw him ride it into the testing area, I noticed he had no brake light! Still got a WOF though.

I think the VTNZ is staffed mainly by failed mechanics.

VTNZ is good for WOF because it's hassle free for bikes, they just pass you. This is very useful because if you know you've got to clean the calipers from a sticking wheel or have a warped disc rotor then you can still get the sticker and fix it in your own time.

Obviously you shouldn't be riding a motorcycle if you don't know what shape it is in and don't do pre ride safety checks and regular inspections so it is best just to get an easy pass.

Have been stopped without WOF before and just said that I was in the process of fixing the vehicle (which was true) and officer said it was fine.

I think you should be ok mate. Just get that bloody sticker sooner or later eh!

What about if you fail a WOF though?

I know that if my car in particular fails, to pickup parts especially, youll have to use it. otherwise its a no win situation - cant get your wof as you cant pickup the shit to fix it, cant fix it as you cant drive it...

I had that problem once.
Had to keep riding to the Bike shop time and time again.
The bike in question had this recurring problem of using petrol but didn't seem to be leaking it anywhere.

If you have just been rebuilding something on the bike and actually want it checked, it's good that you are going to a motorcycle mechanic.

VTNZ inspectors can not locate their own behinds when provided a map and detailed directions.

Not all are like that. Took my bike in yesterday for it's WOF. the tester was a motorcyclist with over 40 years of riding/working on bikes and has been a tester for the last 25 years. Very thorough and fair. I must lower the noise maker somewhat
