    Simple... he waited far too long after dropping the bike before picking it up again. Adrenaline has marvellous advantages.

    Imagine yourself on a gravel road, in a forest, no-one around, it's dusk, and you've just dropped your bike. If you don't pick it up, you're not going anywhere. Ta-da, the bike has been lifted...
