    Police recovered YZ450

Kerikeri police recently recovered a YZ450 from an address in Waipapa with a VIN Number: JYACJ03C83A009362 and ENGINE Number: J313E0009418, it had been swapped for a stolen boat.

It originates from the Taupo and New Plymouth area but may have been stolen locally. We're trying to find and owner for it.

Do police not have access to rego information which contains that VIN number?

Off road bike. Never been registered I'm guessing.

Yea I didn't even think about that. I did a check on carjam, and the VIN has never been registered.

    Makes things much harder..

One might then suggest there may be a need for (voluntarily) registering bikes that aren't used on the road. Purely for the ability to find the owners in cases like this. As I assume even off road bikes are commonly stolen.

I imagine Yamaha could tell who sold/bought it originally, but if it's changed hands since...

A lot of us record our vin numbers, so we can pass them on to the police if a bike is stolen. Would help in cases like this.

If the owner was insured, they have probably got a replacement by now and might not be too worried anyway, hope the pricks that stole it get the learn though.

    Its an 03 model,
I got a phone call about this a wee while back.

Sold new in Hawera on 13/5/2003 could have been anywhere between now and then.

Let me guess, the right to privacy stops the police from just asking who it was sold to, and then asking if they had sold it on or if it had been stolen ? (Without a warrant of course, and they aren't going to go to that hassle)

    Small detective work:

"This followed a break-in at New Plymouth's Mach 1 Yamaha on May 2 when YZ-450 and YZ-250 bikes were taken at around 4am. "

Mach 1 seem to sell second hand bikes.. Could be completely unrelated though

Attempted bike sale in Hawera in 2010:

Even off road bikes? I think more off road than road bikes are stolen.

Back in the days of long long ago when I had hair, all bikes, whether competition bikes or not had registration papers and a plate. Just another thing taken away from us.

Not at all, back in 03 the Yamaha warranty register did not require owners details so they are not in there.

Pretty sure they lost new YZ's
A few shops around the central north island have lost new model YZ450F's and YZ250F's 2010 and 2011 models,

I know Honda's have the original shops initials stamped above the rear shock on road and MX bikes. Well my CRF and CBR both have initials on them.
