ID:	242991I've an opportunity to get my hands on a complete and almost original '78 400/4. Recently re-vinned, far from a beauty queen but nice daily rider and easily restorable.

Is there any demand for this sort of thing and what are they worth?

Edit: It's the F2 model with the squareish tank and the subframe mounted pillion pegs.

Talk to Nuttridge. He likes that kinda stuff.
And I to my motorcycle parked like the soul of the junkyard. Restored, a bicycle fleshed with power, and tore off. Up Highway 106 continually drunk on the wind in my mouth. Wringing the handlebar for speed, wild to be wreckage forever.

If I had the coin I'd be all over one of them. I think you may get $2.5-3k for an okay one.

If the markets still warmish over the square styled later 70's models.....give it time. I cant see them going down in value!

But. Unlikely to become as collectable as something just 2 or so years Older...

I think the 'relive your youth" market is currently at about 1985....
350/4's seem to be coming out of the depressed NZ economy at the mo..... I'd say 2-2.5 k....you can get bikes thu a vin with ancient tyres, brake lines and tyres....but they pick up on important stuff like high beam angle........ ( true I did this)
New tyres, shocks, fork oil.....fun bike.....( well my 500/4 was fun ....so 20% less fun)

They are sensational bikes, or at least were.... My brother had a near new one and I thought it was a wonderful thing. MILES better than the GS550 that followed it. Englands the place where they go gaga over them and they still have a real following.

Here - spares are nightmareishly expensive and it makes them not worth restoring unless you want one to keep. Extra points for an original exhaust system and watch the wierd harold Honda pivoting front brake caliper.

If its rough - Good basis for a special but you would really want it at the right price.

    2K?

It's not the one pictured, that's just a sample. Needs a paint job and a bit of tidying here and there. Goes bloody well too. Dude who owns it brought it in 83. It's done a genuine 42000 miles.

I paid just under $3k for one that needed a bit doing. (say 3 years ago, when I had money). I immediately spent about $1200 on it: tyres, chain and sprockets, new front brake line, all fluids. seat recover air and oil filters, and I paid to have it tuned because it needed the carbs synched. It ran like a top after that. In a fit of madness I sold it, and got $3000 for it. Bloody stupid, one of those "Shoulda kept it" bikes. I sold it in about 2009?

Parts are easy to get if you have a credit card and internet access (econohonda in NZ, David Silver in the UK, CMSNL in the Netherlands). Strong NZD means parts are cheapish at present.

I'd pay $2000 for that, depending on condition. Stuff like the seat base, tank, and fork stanchions, wheelrims and spokes are what i would look at first.

fun little bike. We rode two up to Akaroa on it OK, but it ran out of puff coming back into a beastly norwester.

Everything less than 10,000 cc's runs out of puff into a norwester.......

They were very popular in the UK, considered one of the prettiest bikes honda produced in the mid 70's. From memory? They are only fractionaly faster than the RD, S1, GT-a, 250's of the day on top speed, and no difference on acceleration. Handling is typical 70's,, but when they had a Yoshi pipe on them, those 400/4's sound quite sweet. With 42,000 miles on the clock? and an air cooled 70's small capacity bike? I would be looking at it as a rebuild job. I cant remember there being any major vices, in fact I think most of them over there were mercilessly thrashed and stood it well.
