    KDX 250 - thoughts please

I had a brilliant day yesterday coming too grips with an old watercooled KDX 250 in a lot of mud. I would guess 1995 vintage....
The bike ran very well all things considered, petrol weeped from the carb somewhere & it would not idle properly. Otherwise it went like a cut cat, torquey off the pipe & hilarious on it.

What I would like to know is... what is parts availability like now, did they have any major problems & not being able to find any on trade me (why?) what would a ball park value be?

All the road gear has gone & their are a few issues, carb, wheel bearing, a de-laminating fork leg outer etc but IMHO it is a good bike, after all it had not been used for years but with fresh fuel & a new plug it fired straight up & was happy playing in a swamp all day.

Thoughts, opinions & info much appreciated.

They made a major revision in 95 and went to a 200 and 220cc, this ran till 06 or 07 when it finished production. Apart from a few cosmetic parts they hardley changed from 1995 so parts is not a problem new or 2nd hand. It is also a far better bike that the older kdx's.

Yous should be able to pick a 95+(H model) pretty cheap now that will give you heaps of cheap fun. Some people think this was a great trail bike, I think they're shit.
    Broken bikes wanted, pm details

Well Rupe does have a point, if he is refering to the 250

The KDX 200 IMO is a far superior bike but I suppose its what you want to achieve with it.
My first KDX was a late 80s early 90s model and went great. I think I paid $1800 for it 10 years ago.

    Offer him beer money

I have KDX listings emailed everyday to me. Prices seem to be around the 2K mark. Have heard the KDX 200 is better than the 220 but can't confirm as i haven't ridden any yet.

There have been a few road legal ones on trademe that have tempted me.

The kdx250 is a great bike to play around on dont worry about parts the are easy to come by its like an enduro kx250 differnt gear ratios milder power delivery bigger fuel tank.
The forks should be the sme as a kx if you need parts or just swap the whole legs out.
If the bike has been sitting for a long period strip the carb down and you will probly find the float valve has a bit of grit or corosion under it a clean and blow out will sort it out other wise the carb parts are easy to come by or put a kx carb on it.
If you can get for a good price grab it.
If you get it give it a good going over just like any other bike new gear box oil, new air filter, plug, strip it down and check and grease the wheel bearings, linkages, chanin etc
    Jus my two cents thanks

KDX250's came in two sorts, in 1991-1993 they made an off road only model, it was not that popular and not that close to a kx250,

their are a lot of import KDX250's around, which where road legal soften version of the above, (steel petrol tanks are the give away, they also had a auto lube system) they are pretty gutless for a 250, basic consumables are the same as alot of the kx/kdx range so not that bad to get hold of but engine internals and electrical items are alot harder, if you get it cheap enough its not a bad bike, they came in some funny colours as well incl pink

these 250's share very few parts with the popular KDX200's, which were a far better bike, the KDX220 is a 200 with a bigger piston and a smaller carb, more torque, if you put a 200 carb on them they go very well,

    Cheers all.
The bike I was riding was the steel tank model with autolube but had an FMF gold pipe on it. Plenty of fun for a crusty geriatric like me.
    Hmmm, what to do next.
