What's the go with passing lanes? You know, the ones with the massive sign saying "Keft left unless passing". If a car is travelling side by side with another, it is clearly not passing, but also can't move to the left lane without either speeding up or slowing down. Is the sign more just a guideline than a legal requirement?

Um... Actually it IS law, except on multi lane roads where each lane is clearly marked. Passing lanes are not considered part of multi lane roads, and the Keep left unless passing RULE is applied.

No it is not, undertaking is illegal unless that car in the right is cearly turning right or both lanes are congested.

However ... it it advised in most official publications, that slower traffic should move to the left to allow faster traffic to pass ... (but WHO reads them ... eh !!!)
Maximum speeds allowed depends on the speed zone the marked lanes are in .. (funny that)
If two vehicles in two different lanes ... are travelling side by side ... at the posted speed limit ... they ARE within the law. (like it or not ... usually NOT )

Its advised in the law too, & the law says two cars side-by-side at the same speed is breaking the law.

"Keep left unless passing" is not law ... just as "share the road" signs are not.
If both vehicles are at the posted speed limit ... no law is broken.
If both vehicles are travelling BELOW the speed limit ... The "impeeding traffic flow" occurs ... which IS an infringement ... and BOTH vehicles could be charged ...

not "except on multi-lane roads", on multi-lane roads exceptions can be met to allow use of righthand lane but it's use other than meeting these exceptions is illegal to travel in the righthand lane

Logic dictates that the exceptions noted in law must also apply to passing lanes. After all, there are definitely passing lanes with driveways and side roads on the right. I imagine that there will be a land slide from time to time as well. Maybe even a broked down truck.

Hi Y'All

Here's why so few people get tickets for going too slow.

I was going north in my neenar at about 4.30 today. Neenar? It's blue and yellow, with red/blue lights on the roof. Nuff said.

I radared a car travelling south on SH1 out of Waikuku at 70 km/h. He was coming out of the Waikuku 80 kmh area. Behind him were 11 vehicles, the drivers of 3 of them waved frantically for me to do something about the dude holding them all up.

I whipped around behind the last of the 11, then used the blues n twos to force each of the 11 aside while I went after the car still travelling at 70 kmh, now in a 100 zone.

After creating mayhem to get to him, he eventually stopped, and I got a big mouthful about how I had driven dangerously to catch and stop him, and that I should go catch some burglars or rapists. Yes, pretty much all the shite that I get most days.

After he drove off, $150 poorer, I pondered why I bother, given the criticism I get for doing it, added to the criticism I get for not doing it.

So, should we do it or not?

I'm having a dollar each way, actually. Bad driving kills, but driving badly faster kills even quicker.

Always amuses me that folk bang on about how the roads are full of bad drivers, then in the next breath tell us they should be allowed to go faster.

Go figure.
