    OEM or Big Bore Stroker?

    Hey guys, im rebuilding a 2008 CRF450

Im gonna do a few rides on it but ultimately it will be sold.

If you were buying a bike what would be more attractive because it will cost the same either route I take....

    New OEM crank and piston

    or

    510cc

99mm Big Bore kit from cycle works and 3mm stroker crank from hot rods?

Id really like to do the 510cc option but I think resale will prob be better for all OEM parts??

Not entirely sure why any mortal would need more power than a stock 450 makes, but anyways...

I'd go with stock parts if selling, simply because the buying public will be reluctant to go for a bike that is 'tuned', for fear of expensive rebuilds and a shorter sevice life (regardless if this is true or not). Not to mention that from my perspective, I don't want a 450 because it's too much for me already... sod having to argue with a 510 MX bike out on the trails.

Yeah I think resale would be better OEM, the other side is the 510 would be a point of difference and possibly a sale point..... As far as the power goes the bigger engine is prob easier to ride on trails, far more torque and less gear changes. Big engines dont have much peak HP from my research

Power-wise, I guess it depends what the 510 kit does to the power delivery. None of the 450s I've ridden have lacked torque, it's the snarly, aggressive, hair-triggered throttle reponse at any rpm that has always been the issue for me, mainly as I'm one of the unlucky types that gets arm pump from opening a door...

My CRF450 has all the bolt on bits + carb mods and it still isn't fast enuf.

Stay with OEM, the bike has more potential and most people sell 450s after they realise they are to fast.

People that want faster then a 450 will be buying the CR500 AFs that are now showing up in NZ.

these are sold in spain italy from honda montessa of factory 500 supermotards, with lights and blinkers and somewhere to bolt a number plate , stupid blue wing we don't get that on the crf x even. if you go 510 a supermoto racer may be intrested in it . hell yeah go 510 , i'm out 420 on an old xr400 maybe when that dies again 440 kit next. if i go max bore on 440 kit almost get to 500 not sure if bottom end will handle it . but how coool when pull up beside a 450 pilot and blow him away !!! on your 510. maybe even wheele past a ktm .

i know the honda boys ran 480's early on in there race team , (Damian def ran one) and they had some issues,

the 510 i guess would involve a bit of jetting but should not be an issue, just depending on who makes the crank, i would not reccomend a hot rod's crank, we have had issues with it and since you will be able to ride it pretty good i think i would rather go genuine,

Had a few 500 2 strokes, they are not the monsters that everyone makes out though. I was considering putting a 500 in this frame but the engines are pretty steep

there are some good 480 kits out there tho (athena esp), we just have had head aches with non standard cranks,

But depends what you want to do with it, may be better to get Jimmy to do a bit of head work and get a high comp piston and some cams,

I reckon ringing Jimmy would be the best to ring, as he did all the Honda NZ race team motors around that time, you never know he may have some good stuff lying around,
