    Hand pump death grip

Can anyone give any tips on hand pump? My arms are fine but my hands are stopping me from any speed. The pain is just behind all knuckles on both hands. I ride a 08 KX250. My fitness is not the best but the only thing that is hurting when I ride is my hands.

Larger diameter grips, relax your grip and get a piece of broom handle tie a meter or so of string to the middle with a half kilo weight attached to the other end & do exercises winding the weight up & winding it down multiple times

Relax!!! It's normally caused by hanging on too tight.

Yep, relaxing is the key. Work on gripping the bike with your knees, so that your arms are only really used for controlling the bike, not holding on.

The broom trick works, as do those gyroscopic powerballs, but also consider dampened bars, them vibey, angry 2 smokes just love to give you arm pump (lost count of the times I got intimate with the scenery on my RM250, simply because arm pump meant I couldn't grip anymore).

LOL. Get a job on a long liner, winding 10 mtrs of rope onto sash weights day & night.

I did the above for a job & reckon that would be an excellent exercise, clever

Actually, I disagree with all the exercise idea's, even if you are strong as an ox (I usta weight train hard at the same time I MXed ) you still get arm pump, in fact it can be worse than if you don't.

My first few trips on the boat left me in agony, hands & wrists frozen from the repetition but I did come right & the job became relatively easy.

As your on a MX bike your forks could be far too stiff? I noticed a huge difference getting my forks revavled.

    Welcome to KB

As has been said, just relax a little. It will make going faster a whole lot easier.

Don't worry about exercises. You'll soon get used to it

Giving your hands a shake each time you stop helps the blood get back to where it is needed.

I like to think I'd do ok, but it still has nothing to do with arm pump.
I hopped on a MX bike for the first time in at least 10 years last time I was in Aus at a place called hunter valley (i think), the roughest track in all of aus (at least according to the pro level rider I went there with) and did a full day without any arm pump (everthing else was farked tho!).
It's not in the conditioning, it's just the way you ride.

    Exactly
Though having assembled & run-in numerous green beasties, the OEM grips are like pencils & best replaced ASAP. And if you aren't used to positioning yourself on the bike properly then weaker forearms, wrists, & hands are going to show themselves up quick smart.
The old broom handle weight exercise is one of the cheapest most effective ways to build up strength in the lower arm, and personally having a pretty well munted left arm that has a permanently dislocated radius & severely restricted ROM punting a XR500 around a high country station trail ride for a whole day on 35km loops that wee exercise that was taught to me when I raced MX in the 80s works
