    To 'VIN' a bike?

I'm a dirty foreigner fixing to come over and take all your jobs (and make some inroads into stealing all your women). I'm trying to sort out a bike for my stay so I'm all over Trademe.

I see some of the better priced bikes "need to be re-vinned" or "were de-vinned" etc. What does that mean? Is it a disaster to buy a bike that hasn't been vinned?

It means that the vehicle is no longer, or never has been, complied in NZ, that is, it needs to pass a detailed inspection, be issued registration plates and be licensed for a year (part of the inspection cost).

Usually the result of accident damage, insurers will deregister the vehicle and sell it off, so the new owner must conduct the repairs and then reregister it by way of the inspection process, that way the vehicle is known to be repaired to a good standard (in theory!)

Also can happen if the licence for the vehicle is left unpaid for too long (12 months), the vehicle is deregistered automatically.

In short, unless you find something really cheap which isn't going to need much work to make it compliant, and you want to deal with the hassle, then... don't.

The re-vin process will cost you up to $1000 depending on why the bike was deregistered in the first place. $300 for the VIN process which includes a warrent of fitness plus registration (up $500+ for a litre bike). You may need a certification in which case add up to $400 on top of the VIN.

Thats what it cost me last month to VIN a GSXR 7/11 which needed certification due to extensive mods.
