Damn fine effort, you're an ADV legend.

Just curious, did you come across any of our finest constabulary asking WTF you were doing out there?
And you'd better post a link to your motorbike chains pictures, I feel these may need to be replicated! Cheers

I think I saw a post somewhere on how hideously expensive they were to make? Worth every penny in my opinion!

Not this trip, but I got the usual bombardment of calls like "ya mad bugger" from snow plough drivers and road-crew

A bit on the costly side, but you're right, worth every penny to a) be able to get to your destination and b) have a truck load of fun

Yep, fantastic and the only thing stopping me from ordering you a straight jacket and padded room is your set of chains.

Well done that man, awesome pics.Looks like a whole lot of fun. I have used a length of rope in place of chains once to get out of a really wet valley, was amazed at the difference.

Awesome pictures and I take my hat to your..bravery. But seriously that's one risky ride to attempt on your own- well it appears it was just you.

I was riding Chch to Lake Kaneiri once and broke my leg on the Rocky creek bridge west of Otira, and I can tell, on a fine day an ambulance takes hours. In those freezing conditions if you went over a bank... say no more.

I didn't mean to snow on your parade and as I said, that's one incredible effort and thanks for sharing the pictures.

Without being aware of my extensive preparation routines that is a valid point raised on safety. Safety is always a priority on every solo trip, within my gear was enough food to ration for 6 days, MSR cooking gear operable to -20 degrees, tent, fly, sleeping bag rated to -30, full spare set of thermals plus other wet weather survival clothing and tramping boots, backpack, first aid kit, ample general supplies such as torch/spare batteries/firelighters/etc etc, extensive toolkit, and years of experience in the NZ outdoors.

As for rider protection, I am a religious ATGATT rider, full boots, knee guards, kidney belt, body armour suit, quality gloves, quality helmet.

Then I had a daily check-in contact to report to at set intervals and detailed topo maps left with my intentions

Riding is risky in general, as adventure riders we all know the risks, so once all the safety bases are adequately covered it is a matter of just getting out there and doing it...
