This meeting we were actually ready and packed completely before it was dark on Friday night which was great because it was already freezing and usually we would have been rushing to get the bikes finished. We were up at 5am and the bus had frozen over, it was that cold!
The sun came out without any cloud in the sky which was great! It was absolutely freezing, but there was no wind and no rain so I was happy as.
Qualify: Superlite’s were second out, so there was no heat at all in the track but I had tyre warmers so I was feeling a little more confident in sticking to the track. I gave myself and the bike a couple of laps to warm up and feel the movement in the tyres before pushing for my final couple of laps. I qualified 7th on the grid, (5th in my class) with a time of 1.23.783 which I was happy with getting onto the second row.
Between qualify and race one we could smell burning in the shed and Gareth noticed smoke coming off the front tyre warmer where it was burning a hole through. So that was the end of the front tyre warmer....
Race one: I was less confident as there was still no heat in the day and I had a lukewarm front tyre, but I couldn’t let that stop me too much. I had a pretty bad start because of the new gearing, but I was just going to have to learn to get it right. I had a great but, extremely tough race fighting between 4th, 5th and 6th place in the race with 650’s and Joel on his 125. We were all so close coming out of higgens on our last lap. The 650’s took off down the straight taking their speed advantage leaving Joel and I side by side. We both took Dunlop faster than the bigger bikes a head with Joel taking the outside line and I push through the inside. I finished 5th in the race and 3rd for superlite’s with a new PB of 1.21.797. Me and the rest of Doohan racing were all stoked with the placing on the little 250 which was doing a great job!
Race two: I had another average start with a bit of a wheel stand which was not intended. I had another tough race with some good fights to make things interesting. I had another good fight with Joel and Nicki on her 650. I finished in 7th and 4th in my class with another PB of 1.20.362, which was another happy placing.
Race three: Wasn’t quite as good as I had hoped for. I dropped right back in the first couple of laps and then had to start pushing harder to catch back up. I made my way back to 9th with Joel way up a head 3 places and I had no chance of catching back up to him. I finished in 5th for my class with a lap of 1.20.756.
My day seemed to have been going backwards a little, moving from 3rd to 5th, but I think a lot of it could have been down to my fitness as I was coming in and barely being able to stand up. So I need to getting into a running routine. I was absolutely stoked with my placing for the day, finishing 3rd overall in my class for the day (but missed out on my certificate). It was great to finally get a sunny dry day and I’d like to thank the Vic club for putting that on for us. Was excellent!
Thanks Doohan Racing for having the bike running awesome again after a few issues last round. I had a great day out on the bike and we got in some good team photos. Can’t wait for next round guys!
Also a big Thanks to everyone else who has helped me out, Pacific motorcycle club, Bay Motorcycles, Burrell Signs, Bay Cad services and Mum and Dad!
