Oh I didn't get the part where you're chaining your bikes to the railing and they're cutting that chain. I thought you meant your bike chains.
That being the case you're silly leaving chains etc there, you don't pay for the use of the area hence it must be treated as public property (even though it's not). They also have every right to do what they need to on THEIR property. Moreover the more you guys act like you own the place when you're not even paying the worse you make it for the rest of us as eventually these car park guys will just make us pay some way or another.
You get the parking for free, treat their property with respect which means don't leave your shit all over the place.

Was in discussion with their onsite staff which indicates it was OK. Also in the middle of discussion with their head office to arrange for monthly paid contract onwards (took 2 days, email enquiry and 6 phone calls to get someone). Chain being cut and taken regardless.
Great customer service and helpful sales team to start the contract, I'd say.
Unfortunately just another australian company screwing NZ.

Hi, I park at the Wakefield Street Wilson carpark while at AUT Uni and I got a similar letter left on my bike today (14/09/11) saying that they will be charging from tomorrow. It would have been great if they had given more than half a days notice. I'm not sure if its all Wilson parking buildings. $65 a month works out to approx $900 for a year, a bit of a hike in price from nothing.
I wonder how they will police it, how can they fine you while your parked, you could have taken a ticket and intend to pay at the machine. May be cameras at the exit?

If you came to my house, parked your bike there for free, and then started leaving your property behind without any indication of who owned it or how to contact you I'd probably consider doing the same.
I know it seems harsh, but they are paid to manage someone else's property, and there job is to look after that property and maximise the profit for that person.
A polite note from them giving you some notice to take away your property would have been nice though. It would also have earned them more respect than you have for them now as well after damaging your property.
$65/month sounds good. I think the going rate for a car park is about $50/week, of $200/month. So they are giving bikes a big discount.
