...ok, after googling of 'sf70' seems thats what people refer to the area behind the rangitaiki pub, i thought clints description of a steep descent then stream crossing sounded familiar. so marty i wonder where your mates spot is? perhaps south of clements mill rd, but not sf70 as clint says?

been in and out of that clements mill rd area a lot over the last 20 years, lots of easy forestry access, only ive only done with rifle in hand, always wanted to get in there on the XR but when scarce time comes available i opt for the hunt maybe after your reccy rides there could be a weekenda in the pipe line

rogerh and I stay at Rangitaiki pub and ride our trail bikes a few times each year. The ground is pumice base so gets scoured out by water runoff and the track condition varies each time.
The frost plain can be explored on adventure bikes but because it is so flat it is quite hard to orientate yourself. I recommend NOT attempting the loop downhills, otherwise you might be stuck in there until your bike grows wings
In the video the 2011, 12 captions are the hills and stream at the eastern end of the loop.

lol, yup thats rangitai...ive been on steep bush lined uphills in there where the root infested rut is as deep as your handlebars...youve got your feet up under your handlebars, throttle pinned and thinking 'how the feck am i gunna make this'

last time i was in there was about 8months ago with my son..deep in the pines there was a fantastic expert enduro loop we had a bit of fun on.
im keen for a recce tmw if anyone wants a looky..id be on my dr650 so would have to avoid the steep rutted tracks on the pine hill but theres plenny else to explore

he is right with that, ive mostly rode enduro/trail bikes in there although i took my xr650r in there for a day last year..was fine but had to avoid most of the trails on the pine hill as i was still on road gearing. a superlight trail bike like a new ktm freeride 250r will do nicely please santa

Ross is doing his farm ride on the 23rd which may not happen for me but the following weekend is looking good for a mosey around back country exploration ? Should have a new rear T63 on by then as we'll.

A light weight trials bike would be nice please but tough on the roady sections.

know wot ya mean about bloody dial up, My plan got upgraded about 6 months ago, so far son has managed not to run it out.
Took my old KL250 out tonight for some practice amoungst the trees and managed some full lock turns with feet up, will keep practising though during the week if i can. Used to do a lot of trials riding many years ago but heavier and sooooo not as fit now. I reckon on Sat afternoon there are going to be some very tired riders heading back home.

We had 40gigs last year but Telecom contacted us as we were only using 28g at the most. So down graded to 30g which has been enough till 18yr old has started (with his new lap top) watching with vengeance!
Good on you having some practice on your 250 Ross. Thanks for coming up to help me tomorrow to get the XR200 ready as a loan bike for next weekend. Was starting to get a bit stressed as have been so busy with work etc. Need to get the DR into dirt mode also.
