Where we went in is way past the tavern. Went for a nosy in there a few years ago, rode for about an hour before turning round as we were on our way to puroa forrest so didn't have a lot of time - its huge country in there and well worth a visit. My 4wd mate says you could easily make a weekend of it but you need to be well supplied as its not called frost flat for nothing . He can give us maps and gps of his camp site and tracks but he said its pretty easy to navigate. was planning on a small reconnaissance ride in there to see if its worth taking the crew in for an offical adventure.

you do that, the 530 would be right at home in there, in fact it would be plain wrong to leave it behind.

Looks like I'm gonna have to sort a visit sooner rather than latter....will make the necessary inquires and report back.

I would hazard a guess at about here http://goo.gl/maps/C5Rqk
Have been eyeing up something on my map collections and doc pages in that area.
There is a waterfall marked and several doc campsites.
And there though to the pub was always the meanest frosts, used to regularly see minus 7 on the gauge through there on a nice white morning

SF70. I have heard that is a spectaculary important, rare & endangered environment & DOC don't want anybody going in there. However I don't think they have ever bothered to put up a sign advising the 99.99% of the population that aren't in the Taupo 4wd club of that. Keep to the main tracks but.

I haven't been in for a few years but there was a nice loop, big downhill then climb at the top end to cross the stream which, then, meant the track was best done clockwise. Going up the southern side & back out the same way might not be too bad but to get right around would not be for big bikes. That was a while back though.

BTW we will be out at the Rec camp at Minginui Fri & Sat nights if anyone is keen on cruising over to say gday or camp over.

    Cheers
    Clint

Well I've just finished watching that cycles south series on youtube and feel we should follow in their footsteps and just plunge headlong into this.
Googling that stuff Clint mentioned brings up a few links via other forums and the consensus seems to make use of access while its still available but keep it tidy.
Whats this rec camp at minginui? Been looking at that DOC campground over that way a little further east...

that area goes into native bush along clements mill road, we went in there on a central NI ride a-ways back, to view the 'kaimanawa wall'... just looks like a regular rock formation to me, but there are those who say it was cut and stacked by an ancient stonecutting peoples

anyway, is the 'sf70' area south of clements mill/tauhara intersection? ive been wanting to explore down in there
