    Roundabouts

Roundabouts...why do they insist on beautifying them with plants? It pisses me off that the choose to block out the view of the opposing traffic so that you cant see whether they are indicating to turn right or left or going straight through untill the last second...what dickheads decided to plant them all out instead of giving you a clear view...what about the safety aspect?....In the UK a lot of the roundabouts are just a painted circle on the road ,they dont need to be fucking huge mountainous jungle covered lumps.

    Totally agree.

Have also seen planter boxes in daft places, filled with daft plants, like outside the old council building in Tawa. In my car (lower to the ground than on my bike) it's hard to see clearly to the right when pulling out of Woolworths.

It sometimes seems like they make visibility dificult, to make you slow down, to (supposedly) increase safety or something.

One of the worst crash intersections in Christchurch is QEII and Marshlands Road. It has a forest growing on the roundabout, which blocks everyones view.

No wonder the crashes are plentiful.

I would say that half the problem in that intersection is also the people indicating right and then going straight through, the people in the inside lane indicating left and then going straight through (likewise some who do this in the outside lane).

Then there's the real muppets that turn right in the outside lane

I find the forest on the round about to be a non issue because of the size of the round about and the fact that the forest is far enough back to see where cars are coming from.

Actually that's something that pisses me off too.

"Slow down". Why? That's the option that makes everything worse.

Orange means "stop if you can". So when it's orange, you stop. Simple.

If you can't stop, then you just keep going. Slowing down, in this case, would just mean you are more likely to still be in the intersection when the other vehicles get their green.

In years past I have heard officialdom defend plantings along the lines of "If you can't see you have to slow down and that's good."

BUT. I notice in The Tron that a lot of bigger planting have disappeared over the past years to allow more visibility.

I know which I prefer. And it ain't jungles...

Maybe you are right Slofox, that if you cant see, it would slow you down but it can still impede traffic flow and anyway it still pisses me off...
and as a biker I like to have a good view of my surroundings in order to survive...its just annoying in the car..but on the bike its important .

No, if you can't see them coming 'till they're closer, then you have less time, so you gotta go FASTER!!!!!

Driving back in Blighty recently cars used roundabouts for cornering practice, you had to really shift to get on them - great fun for a bike, pity I was in a Hyunda lump
