    Question Stay you mongrel!

Just a bit concerned - nothing too major (but I'm procrastinating doing my Uni assignment which is sitting ominously in the "minimised" button at the bottom of my screen), yesterday I was parked on a slope (still sitting on the bike) and it started stumbling foward in little jolts. It was in gear, the brakes weren't on and it felt like the teeth of the gears weren't staying connected. It is due for an oil change but I wouldn't have thought dirty oil would do that. What do you fellas think? It's prob just old age.

You mean it was parked and turned off?
If so and it was "jolting" forward, its either turning the engine over, or the clutch maybe slipping. What gear was it in? In 1st it shouldnt really move at all, in 3rd+ it would be fairly easy to push while in gear.

It was off (well - the key was turned on but the engine wasn't going) and in 1st. It can't be the clutch (she says in despair!) - I only put new plates in a couple of months ago and it's fine otherwise.

Twas just bumping over compression. Each jerk was one cylinder going over TDC. Nowt to worry about short term, maybe indicate valves'll need doing one day

Agree with Ixion's comments it was just turning over on compression and being a 250 four that has little cylinders and will turn over quite easily.
    Cheers

agree just turning over a little 250 four, small pistions. 1st wont really hold with someone sitting on it. but it shuld hold itself. (i think) you need a hand brake.

Solution? Park on the flat. If in doubt, buy a spirit level at Placemakers...

But Mr Hitcher, wouldn't one have to park the bike to be sure the area you are about to park on is indeed flat?

Compression bump alright. That reminded me of an incident nearly 20 years ago. I had parked my HQ Holden in a friends extremely steep driveway. Left it in 1st gear (manual column change) and handbrake on. After being there about half an hour came out to see the car bumping down the driveway in reverse! It was nearly on to the road. In a panic, shot down and fumbled with the keys to unlock the car. Just managed to get to it as it reached the road. Phew! :slap:

No. Just affix said level to the handlebars for easy reference. It has the added benefit of also acting as an accelerometer...

And if it could be swiveled 90 degrees one could tell if it was parked on the centre or side stand.
