Bike buying insight?

Okay, So I am trying to persuade my parents to allow me to get a 600, to store until I get my full, Hopefully in just under a month and a half.

So the bike I'm looking at is an 85' Gpz600r.

It has had a fresh rebuild of the engine, stripped down completely and rebuilt with new parts, including a respray with fairings, battery, and all that stuff. To avoid having to list everything, here's the link.

Now, he wants 3k for it. That's including the cost of the bike and the parts that he has fitted. not including labour.

1) Do you think that is reasonable for what he has done to the bike, and

2) Do you think that in all honesty, I should look at getting a step between bike instead for that kind of money? If so, what can you recommend that,

*Is ideal for commuting around 40k per day, and can handle the long range trips (300k+), and lastly, wont have too much power. As in 80+ horsies. And ideally a sports bike. (3k budget.)

I am on a GN250 currently and although the seat is comfy, I'm too tall for it..... Not to mention that as of late it's having a hissy fit at me and deciding to work when it wants to. (Much like my Brother)

Not so sure about whether it's a good deal, the unknown Ks on the engine is slightly worrying. The fact that someone has torn it down and put it back together again is also slightly worrying as you have to hope they knew what they were doing.

It's an old heap, keep your money safely in your pocket. Most people can't undo a screw without rounding the head, you don't want a bike reassembled by an amateur. That aside, it's too much money in any case. Putting the auction up in classic and vintage doesn't actually make it either.

That model is already a classic. Spend the $1400 on tyres and oil changes, spend the other $100 on some weed and beers.

Fun fun ride, even at this age, worth spending another six months saving for if it comes down to that.

Remember, that GPZ needed an engine rebuild and a fairing respray because it was completely rooted. He has spent $3000 on it, and that does not go very far

It could easily be a money pit.

You could get this VFR400 for approximately your budget. I'd say there's less chance of it eating all your money and being unsaleable in future. It's also a very good model of bike as well as being potentially an easier sell to your parents, 400 doesn't sound big.

I can't see why you'd want to get a working 600 but not ride it until you get a full. The only 600 I can see a point in getting at this point is one that you're going to ride illegally anyway or one that's broken that you can play around with fixing?

I wouldn't buy anything without WOF and reg, especially not if you are planning on using it as a commuter in the near future. The re-vinning process is a nuisance, and can be quite expensive and time consuming.

You've got "first big bike" syndrome. Do not in any circumstances take that old bike for a ride. It's worth $1700 tops. GPZ/X 600 gearboxes are notorious for gearbox failure too. Seller may be genuine but is it worth the risk? Reason for sale sounds strange too as they're hardly midget bikes.

If you're mechanically minded then I guess fucking about with shite old bikes is fun. However, shite old parts still cost an absolute fortune and you mentioned a daily commute so you want something reliable (so that rules out Suzuki's ). I'd stick with Honda or Yamaha myself.

N. .. but I would never buy a bike with lowered racing style handle bars as you will get sore wrists and your periferal vision is reduced. Try and get a sit on a similar bike to see if you like the riding position
