    What a P.O.S.
May need to upgrade or use the boys laptop

Thats the sort of info I'm after. I recorded on setting 4 today, great quality, but probly not needed
So... I't saving what I've done as a MSWMM file ext, WTF how can I save as something else ?
I wouldn't bother using any less than a dual core PC with 2 gig of RAM.
To have a nice experience editing I built a PC with a quad core AMD Phenom II 3.20 GHz CPU, 16 GB RAM and a reasonable graphics card with it's own memory and Windows 7 - 64bit.
Magix movie maker and Adobe Premiere Elements 8 or 9 (affordable but not cheap) or one of the PRO versions (very expensive) are really good editors.

Back to windows Movie Maker... yes, .mswmm is your project file, not a movie file. I gave up messing with that program many years ago so I'll leave advice with that to the others who are already answering.

I used to use Blender but now use Kdenlive. Not that that's any help.
But yep, try recording in mode 1. It should play/edit no problem and is still good for YouTube...

FFS I thought checking the valve clearances was a difficult part of riding ...

What ever happened to the good old fashioned yarn, that way the hills can be steeper, the crashes more spectacular, the heroics more... um heroic

or, like me, you could decide that the whole video editing thing is too much hassle and just record in 2-5minute chunks and find the best ones and upload them straight to youtube.

people only want to see the highlights anyway - intros and fades are all a waste of time

I agree, while all the longer bits seem nice for you personal pleasure...youtube is all about the good bits...like they say "enough dancing, show me your tits"

I also recently got a GoPro and use a Mac Pro laptop (and before any moans and groan about the Mac), it works very easy as you expect. The mac pro has the SD slot in the side, so getting the files in is peice of piss.

Living by the good bits theory, I simply open the files...and visually trim all the crap out...and then do a save as.

Most people will never know what or how to make it look clever, editing at best will still suck your life force....so just keep it simple, and spend the time riding

This is very true! I use Sony Vegas and it can do all sorts of wonderful editing, fading, merging, effects. But apart from a couple of simple fades and a title at the beginning so I can easily remember where and when, I don't use any of it. I have waaay better things to do and no-one really cares anyway, they just want to see the crashes...

I have a riding buddy that does amazing things with his set-up (same as mine), but his dad is a film maker, so he has a little bit of an unfair advantage...

Yes it is. That is the answer to the question I was thinking.

And this kind of sums up my attitude. To my way of thinking bike riding is a crap spectator sport. It is a participant thing to me.

But I hate stopping and starting riding, and can never seem to capture good stills, but see heaps of good ones while I am moving. Stopping, finding your camera, and taking your gloves off, you just sort of loose the moment.

So a question for those who understand this crap better than me. Can you capture stills with something like a GoPro and software? They will never be high res, but getting a flock of birds taking off at dusk requires more patience than I have. Or am I better to mount up a still cam and remote trigger? Or just learn how to use a camera??

With a GoPro I may get some of the "good bits" as well, this again requires the discipline to run the camera quite a bit. Reading all this makes it seem like a bit of effort. Am I wrong?

    Sorry for the newbie hijack....

Basically I capture stills whilst riding. No need to stop, no need to take gloves off. Camera on elastic strap around neck and in top pocket. Easy to pull out, turn on, point in general direction, take photo, turn off and put away. If you have to, you can just drop the camera and it's not going far.

The GoPro is too wide angle to get any sort of flock of birds type detail.

can capture frames easily from the vid editing software, or if you get a frame just right a screencap works just as well.

The GoPro has a mode where you can set it to take stills at a certain time interval instead of video. Decent quality images too...

This picture is shrunk heaps before I uploaded it. I think (and could be wrong) that the GoPro takes 5 megapixel shots.

This needs organisation....... Not my strong point. More worried about busting stuff.
And I find it a bit limiting. I have tried similar, but maybe I should try a lanyard type thing. Also works OK with motocross gloves, but I dont always use them. What you suggest is for slower riding. The trouble for me, is I see some supurb shots at times, but maybe only one or two a day, and to date I have never been set up to get them.

I was kinda hoping that a simple bolt on would get these, just by pointing my head in the right direction. Wishful thinking I know. Inevitably I am doing 100k's on the open road, or being stupid (read needing to focus) at the time. Capturing a good image with a small apature, on the move, and little planning is always going to be a long shot.

I am pleased to hear there are some linux editing options tho. We don't have a windows computer in the house any more, and can't afford to be a mac fanboy. Might just buy a second hand one, or borrow one sometime, and see what comes out. May be better than I expect.

Not for Nordie, he's taken pics of me backwards over his shoulder while we were both doing 100 along gravel roads.

I've taken some really good shots while doing that but for every good one there's scores of crap, out of focus, blurry ones. With digital cameras it's easy to take a couple of hundred snaps during a weekend sometimes, but only 30 or 40 will be any good.

I can see I might have to try a different editing program, however... downloading one is not an option
I got the vid from last weekend converted (loss of quality) and edited, then "published" it which turned it into a wmv file, which lost a bit more quality again I think. Just need to add some music and head to an internet cafe to upload it, maccas free wifi just won't cut it

There is a lot of wind noise when facing ahead which seems to lessen when my heads turned I was using the door without the holes in it too. Also got a bit of fogging inside the housing, right in front of the lense too, not sure what happened there.

Yep, he likely has skills I don't.
I would get great pictures of the sky, and likely not stay vertical

When in doubt read the instructions !
In there i'm sure it says "we have sorted it" or words to that effect !
The door with the holes has LESS wind noise ! The other one is for when it's raining !!!!

Other thing is (if ya gonna use the freeware) anyvideoconverter settings i have found the best are (and i may be bettered here (god willing) )
    customised AVI video !!!
    In Video options =
    Frame size 720x576
    bitrate 12000
    video framerate 25

Working for me and best picture i've found there !!!
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !
