    A bargain?

Saw this listing on Tme. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/moto...-416367869.htm.

The start price, $8500, seems pretty high considering all the faults listed.

Is a Harley really any dearer than a Jappa to bring up to scratch?

more than likley cheaper, as there are not as many model changes
effecting the mechanical sides of a harey
when compared to the massive amounts of changes even in one year of jap bikes.
I think I am right is saying the interchangabiity of harley parts mean
that parts from a fifty year old wil fit a new one.

But then, tractors are meant to last for years anyway
To be old and wise, first you must be young and stupid.

More so with these newer years, given the vast market of aftermarket parts. Not so much with older bikes.

You will find troubles when swapping drive components from Harley to Harley, as there are minor variations between models. And alignment issues with the various frames, in some cases needing new spacers and a jack shaft! I by no means am familiar with all the ins and outs though.

I'd pay that much for the bike in working condition. For the "unknown" factor of what other problems may be there, my opinion is that it should be treated as a wreck or spare parts, and priced as such.

    It is a good price.
I would ditch those fork slugs, they are a disaster waiting to happen.
So it would require new tubes at least.

    I'd buy it.

Now I have to convince myself I have never seen it.

    Before I do something rash.

    Like buying that bike.

An extension that screws into the top of the fork to lengthen the fork.

    As seen in photo 12.

An "old school" way of extending your forks when +over stock ones were rare and expensive to obtain.
Basically a ½ inch thread holds those together.
1 decent pothole could see you kissing the asphalt when your front end snaps in 2.

    Absolutely not.

Some parts dearer, others cheaper but no way is it likely to cost more.

Firm difference in opinion here, having worked on both. I disagree.

I guess the Jappa 2nd part are more common - ergo cheaper.

But for good new/as-new stuff it's even-stevens most of the time.

Then you need to consider resale value.
