You can try. It's like 20 bucks to send in an exemption request.
Just write in a lovely letter about how clean your record it (plus your bike is now your main form of transport) and your work commitments (maybe also how long you've worked there etc), you can include a letter from your boss as backup.
Be very careful and specific in your explanation and you might just get it granted. You could possibly point out the problems you would have taking public transport at that time etc.
If successful they will probably be just as specific in that you'll be allowed to right to "work address" at "4-430am" and all other times outside the usual restriction are as per normal L plate.
Only 20 bucks so go get a form filled out (or better attach an awesomely written letter) and send it through![]()
Thanks for that just found NZ Transport Agency number and gave them a rang..
the person that picked up said they don't give exemptions to learners.
where would i go to get a form to fill out? might be better doing it that way and trying..
thanks again.
Hmm unsure if there's a hard and fast rule about that or not. I remember being passed around a few times and each person at NZTA had a different answer.
You're local AA has the right form at the counter, can't remember off the top of my head the form ID but mbike exemption will be understood I'm sure. Maybe there is a straight "no" for learners, but $20 ain't the biggest loss in the world to be proven wrong... If you've been driving other vehicles for a while they might be more lenient about you driving in the scary hours of darkness than they would be as a first time road-user.
Hell I was exempted to ride a bigger bike on my restricted and I'm a small guy. It's just whether your letter is persuasive or not!
sweet will give it a go
the person at AA said it was up to me if i wanted to risk doing it with out one. lol
as it is only like 10 min ride if taking the fast way.
You will probably be ok even if you dont get an exemption, just dont ride like a nob & dont crash as your insurance company would have an out if it was your fault.
At least you can do 100k now.
I did my learners riding to work down the motorway, just didnt put on the L plate as it made it really obvious that I was breaking the rules. Never got pulled over (couldnt go much faster than 100 anyway).
Good luck
thanks every-one! how much is the fine by getting pulled over with out an L plate? lol..
I only rocked an L plate when I sat the test too, but keep in mind, you arent legally on the road without it, so insurance doesnt apply. A lot of the fines are cheaper now ($100 as opposed to $400) but carry heavy demerit point penalties. So if you get pinged for speeding and no L plate, you're easily halfway to losing your license.
