Easy way to find out when "on-hold" rego expires?

The old man has the rego for his old car on hold and asked me how to find out when that "expires". To be honest, I didn't have a clue. When I put the bike on hold, I put a reminder on my calendar. He's not that organised and besides, he wasn't the one to put it on hold in the first place.

Do they send you a reminder?

Can you go online and check?

Do you have to do the archaic thing and phone a living person?

Do they still have living people answering phones first?

you can look it up on www.carjam.co.nz, shows the date of the exemption expiry.

Last time I had a vehicle on hold, near the end of the 12 months I got a rego reminder from NZTA

Yep, you'll get a letter from the Powers That Be a few weeks before the exemption runs out telling you it's almost time to start coughing up again.

Cool, cheers muchly all. I couldn't remember if I got a letter or not. I thought I'd give carjam a go since I signed up ages ago and forgot. Turns out it doesn't expire until the day of his birthday next year! Bloody old people and their memories. Typical case of CRAFT (Can't Remember A Fucking Thing)

Now I'm gonna try Pete's method and see what's easiest.

EDIT: Turns out the NZTA site only tells if the vehicle is currently on hold but doesn't give you the date. Carjam gives you the date but you have to sign up to get the details. Now to wait until next year to see if he gets a letter.

Moral of the story...make your own note of when the period finishes. That's the easiest. 2nd easiest is Carjam if you're worried.

You get the reminder exactly 1 month before the hold is finished, as soon as you have that you can register the vehicle (without back-dated fees). The new registration starts from the end of the hold period.

Having 3 currently registered m/cycles and alternating the hold periods for the past 2 years to take advantage of the fact that the new rego starts from the end of the hold period i have obviously been fooling myself all this time. If it makes a difference i always do it online.

I was doing some work on this bike so did not get the warrant until near the end of the hold period but it illustrates my point, remember that your rego label only has an expiry date and the system does not work off the transaction date.

Next time, try doing it across the counter to see whether you get a 'live' label that gives you what amounts to a free week at the front of the licence period.

funny how you can get a fine for no rego but if your rego is out by a couple of months when you redo it its backdated to the date of expirey, must be a safety issue

Do I really have to spell it out to you, once it's done online, and the notice is generated 1 month before the hold expires, you then whip down to the AA get them to print a label there and then or wait 3-4 days for the label in the post.

Just to confuse you further let's say Bob has 2 motorbikes.....

b1-hold 2month / free 1month / rego 3month / wait 1month / hold 2 month
b2-rego finish / wait 1month / hold 2month / free 1 month / rego 3month

It's not perfect as some may work out but it works for me.

As to the original post, dont loose your notification.

Posting on KB is like sticking your bare arse into a gay bar, you know you shouldn't, you know it's going to hurt and you know someone's going to have a good laugh at your exspense.

So how long will this loophole last now.

You don't need to spell anything out. If your experience has been that you can put 3 months rego on before the hold-until date comes due, yet get a live rego good until that date 3 months hence - good for you.
Rego'ing is a funny business, with all sorts of anomalies. One's where one place will say yes and another will say no - etc.
BTW - unless you 'know' someone - 3 months is the minimum hold period. If you liven before the time is up, even the day before, you are liable for the whole fee as from the date the rego was last live. This from a rego agent and NZTA's website.

Edit - I see what you did there, with the dates. Just another of the anomalies I mentioned...
