    Steering damper questions

steering dampers and their finer details are outside the scope of my knowledge.

Im thinking about getting a steering damper for my yam, and after a good search, I see there are many many options.

Basically my question is: would a steering damper of say a 2003 gsxr 600 work if it was mounted to my bike (2001 R1).

If it WOULDNT work, can you explain to me why? - thanks

A damper's a damper, providing the stroke's long enough for each bike. The difference in the details can lie within the leverage being applied to the damper and the quality of the unit.

    depends which one I get!!

Id be getting a second hand one probably, rebuild it and check its condition before mounting, and if necessary, I will get a custom made bracket for it.
came across a few deals that might be too good to turn down

No shit mate.Just beware of the pitfalls eh,recently got sent a pic of one mounted off a totally different bike with some success if it was to be ridden purely round tight left handers, shame really as the bloke that did it was somewhat flushed with his skills until...

yeah I will be double checking everything through its range of motion before riding, I just didnt know if I had to get a damper with a particular rating or something.

there seems to be some decent universal kits around

What for? Have you got a specific issue with the bike?

I use this: A Hyperpro RSC active damper. Google the difference between passive and active dampers; basically it increases damping relative to the severity of the shake. It's brilliant on my 98 R1. Not cheap though. I had raised the rear as part of my suspension upgrades so the front was quite prone to shakes. Couldn't hold full throttle over the hump at Hampton, or on bumpy sections of back roads. Now: no problems, pin it and steer. You don't notice the damping, just that it tracks the line you want.

Hey TT, here are a couple of steering damper pics as mounted on my 01 R1.

Ohlins and works well with no nasty steering head shakes over bumps under power as AristoC already stated.

Only bugger is you have to remove it to get the tank off which I've had to do recently to access air filter and fit speedo healer. Only a 5 minute job really.Click image for larger version.

Nice bracket, going round the front of the headstock. Is that off the shelf, or did you fabricate it?

Off the shelf, Harris mounting kit which previous owner installed.

    1. so it will do the job its designed to do when fitted, not necessary EVERY time I ride, but there are definitely times when I need it.
