Actually you might also not be able to see them due to viewing angles. LED's produce a very directional light. Similar to lazers. So they have a narrow viewing angle. A globe has almost no viewing angle - but this means that is requires a reflector to reflect the "wasted" light out the right direction.
This means that if the LED is facing a certain way, and has no diffuser lens it would be a case of.
dont see it
dont see it
see a slight glow
AHHHHHH MY RETINA'S A BURNING
Ah there they are
nope don't see it anymore
as the bike goes past
I am happy to go in detail on this with whomever wants to hear. But my one and halve decade's worth of experience with LED's might put people to sleep so rather not post here. Its great to put people to sleep by telling them how to make white light by throwing an electron of a crystal.
But here is the KB version
Pretty picture
see how even with the slightest angle the intensity of the light drops off?

Have plenty of experience myself with LEDS, and over 30 years in the Electrical feild. Lighting is a big part of what we do these days, so I couldnt imagine any situation where one would use leds for automotive use without a diffuser and reflector. As stated earlier, I used 5 watt leds, but not your standard 5mm round leds, High Intensitey Cree leds are the way forward. Anyone seen a P7, or an H7 LED Lenser torch in action? Thats Cree leds at work. Not the cheapest, but far superior to those crap things you get from supercheap.
I can see them... No I can't... I can see them... No I can't... I can see them... No I can't... I can see them... No I can't... I can see them... No I can't... I can see them... No I can't...
