Exemption for Learner from 10pm-5am restriction

Hi,

What's the best way to go about seeking an exemption from the 10pm-5am curfew that applies to 6L and 6R?

(For what it's worth, I'm currently on 6L, but years ago held a full bike license in Australia.)

What kinds of arguments have tended to work best?

Blanket exemption? No way.
A work-related one to allow night shift - probably. On the grounds that there is seldom/never public transport available.

If you have a full car license they will tell you to use that instead probably.

In the past I gained an exemption from the learners hours due to swapping to night shift at work, however I understand that now these only apply to the direct route from your work to your house for a reasonable length of time before/after your shift.

I also gained an exemption to ride a larger sportier bike on medical grounds, but I have been informed they no longer do this.

Keep your application factual, literate to the point, and supply written proof from your employer etc if you feel it is needed.

to get an exemption you need a reason, not an excuse.
a reason would be that you have a job, and your normal working hours fall outside of your licence restrictions.
To be successful in such an application, you would also need to support your application with a signed letter from your employer stating what hours you would be working, so they have confirmation of your reasons for wanting one.

In addition to this, the exemption will outline quite clearly EXACTLY what the exemption entitles you to. It will entitle you to travel DIRECTLY home from work, and, in most cases, the exemption will actually outline the route you HAVE to take. If you are pulled over, and you have deviated even slightly from the exemptions clauses, your exemption disappears, and you receive some pretty heavy fines.
You are also required to carry a copy of the letter on you at all times. again, failure to do so, and you get bitten hard.

If you used to have a full bike licence in Australia, I would suggest getting a copy of it, or a letter from the police over there to confirm that you held a full, and make an attempt from there to have your licence recognized/transferred or whatever.

At 10 pm your brain turns into a pumpkin.

The ladies at the NZTA that do exemptions KNOW THIS FOR A FACT.
Just wanting to have a job is not relevant. Even though you earn half what they do but work much harder.

If you could walk, drive, catch a bus, taxi, or have ever been able to get to work in the past you are fucked. In fact, if you have EVER got to work in the past except by driving then you will be declined.

You have to have a valid reason for requiring the exemption, but as others have said, there is no hard and fast "this will automatically get you one", it's a case by case decision. It will likely not apply more than a month or so past the end of the current license (ie, if you have 2 months to go on your learners it will probably apply for 3 months).

As far as I know, now that the 70kph thing is gone, the only difference between L and R is the 'plate'.

When the GDLS was set up a local Chief Traffic Officer (Ministry of Transport, or Te Manatu Waka) could grant an exemption from the conditions. It used to be quite easy to get one, as long as you had a legitimate reason.

Today, and largely due to the number of people taking the piss out of the system, it's a lot harder to get an exemption. It's a centralized system, in order to give more consistency I.e. it doesn't depend on kissing the local CTOs bottom.

If so many hadn't wroughted the system, it'd be simpler. Simple.

That would work, except for:

Those unexpected booze/WOF/whatever police checkpoints
Bored cops, especially in country areas, who run the plates of every vehicle they see

Self defeating argument.

Bored cops wouldn't be doing reg checks if everyone actually registered their vehicles. If everyone complied, there wouldn't be checks. Blame those who take the piss out of the system, not the Popos who fish for the obvious fish.
