The 42nd traverse is 35km of open, easy riding & takes 1 hour to ride one way. It's probably a bit tame for a RM. Mountainbikers start from SH47 & ride downhill also expect 4wd & quads in summer. Definitely more challenging when wet but the streams rise quickly. The main track is marked with roadside markers after each intersection, if you don't see a marker (tall narrow plastic) you've taken the wrong track. The track to 10 bunk hut is a good explore - 1 hour return.

Fishers was a great track, going downhill from National Park but it has been graded & gravelled as part of the national cycleway.

It appears John McDonald Loop is a mtb track.

I recommend you try Rangtaiki Tavern on SH5, 40 km from Taupo. Park up beside the carpark and explore the forest, its great riding on pumice but beware the washouts. Cabins cost $25pp.
