    Re-rego a classic?

Hi I brought a 1970 Honda cd 175 when I was 18 and blew the head on it. That was back in 1995 so I filled the tank and poured oil in the cylinders and parked it under a house till now. I never put the rego on hold so I still have the plates it has a vin number attached to the frame. But the papers are long gone. What do I need to do to get it back legaly on the road ( before I get my tools out) ?cheers

The vehicle can be re-vinned without much drama, as you have plates, a VIN number, and possibly even the ownership papers.

The NZTA demand you waste a cops time by making him fill out a form with the statement that the police dont have the vehicle listed as stolen. The policeman will get this information from the police computer, which gets it from the NZTA computer, but you still have to do it.

Then VTNZ or a similar agency can get new plates, wof etc for it. They all like to charge, and you will usually need to spend money proving that they had race standard brakes and shocks in 1970.
David must play fair with the other kids, even the idiots.

It's not that bad, I recently re-registered an 83 BMW that was in the same state, ring LTSA first and ask about their record of the plate number then get the bike to wof standard and take it for compliance. I suggest you ring around first to find the best place for compliance as some are more helpful than others and then front up and talk to them, I have found them really helpful to anyone that hasn't done this before.
If the old plate is in good condition you can now apply to re-use it, this came in a month ago and involves contacting LTSA and sending a clear pic demonstarting the condition of the plate, they then decide whether or not you can use it.
As the bike is pre 91 you don't need to get the brakes checked for compliance but they do need to work properly and you may need to prove ownership or make a witnessed declaration about the bikes ownership with a JP, talk to the compliance guys first....

    Good luck!

There is no requirement for the brakes to work like todays twin discs up front. The age of the bike is taken in to account. But it pays to get them working as well as possible. This might mean fitting new shoes. I have taken a few old bikes through the system and never had a problem. Make her look nice, have all the required papers/info with you and it should be a breeze.

May the bridges I burn light the way.
