    Clutch basket?

    righto just put in a new piston ring, while i was waiting for the ring to turn up i figured i would be pro-active and inspect the clutch (one of "those" jobs) all the plates, fibers looked good no discoloration or anything suspect, the basket however pretty badly notched up, basically i hear you can get away with filing down the notches, so my question is how much slop between the plates and basket is to much? i will be looking at replacing the basket over winter, which brings me to my next questions, 1. after market or oem? 2. special tools needed? 3. should i also replace inner hub and pressure plate?

    Dont file it. Use wet and dry sand paper and simply rub the notches off. You wont take off enough to make a huge difference to how the clutch works.

    Sandpaper is a more difficult prospect I think. You need to keep the basket fingers straight and parallel, or you get uneven pressure on the fibers, causing poor action. Sandpaper will need to be wrapped around a file or similar anyway.

    A fine file is best I found, but remember you're filing alluminium, which is not ideal with a file so clean it out constantly with a wire brush. Slow and steady wins the race on this front, don't fuck up the angles.

    Each time you file it, the slop increases. This makes no difference to your drive or clutch strength, but it does reduce how long it takes to get notched again.

    This is experience from a heap of shit Ducati dry clutch, which I should have just thrown away and replaced with a nice wet item from a jappa, and drilled some holes to get oil to the area.

    Whats it like to ride with? If you can't notice the notches and clutch feel is good, I wouldn't bother. Winter isn't that far off. You're onto it with the full replacement, as Drew says, once they get notched they're pretty much fucked, filed or not.
