    Lightbulb What should you look out for buying a VTR1000?

    Like the title says.... Any specific things you should look at for with these bikes?? Will only be buying a 2006/2007 model

    Nuthin really , just get one with the most extras like mufflers,scot oiler,pack rack etc.

    Not sure they did an '07, or even an '06. May have sat on the shop floor for a few years. Good solid bike with the usual Honda issues.

    Due major service at 24k, which costs a bit as the valves clearances are checked (never really altered). Will also be due a new chain and sprockets about then too.

    Usual faults/gripes on VTRs are

    Reg/Rect (never heard a post 2001 going, but hey)
    Front end over damped and under sprung for Fatjims etc
    Brakes suck
    Valve train tensioner springs snap, and can cause major damage. But again, never heard of a late model doing this.

    If lt's under 15k then it should be spot on, just look for signs of being left outside and not looked after in the forks bottoms as the aluminium gets a bit tarnished and pitted.

    check you have the original pipes in original condition. Also check you have the seat cowl.

    If you buy one and it has a scott oiler, take it off and place in bin, honestly I dont know why people fit these messy things.

    Regulator/rectifier will not be an issue on later models, early models were fitted with one without a heatsink.

    Camchain tensioners are an issue, they can start to fail as little as 30,000k.(best to replace camchain & tensioners, as the chain can stretch enough to cause piston/valve issues in extreme case).

    There is nothing wrong with the carburator setup.(If you did not know, its been proven that a carburator can make more peak HP than a EFI setup)

    Brakes are fine, just fit good pads

    What should you look out for buying a VTR1000?

    a TL1000S ?????

    My personal opinion.... riding everyday to work (72km).

    Benign handling..... not as twitchy as other bikes.

    Front forks are soft....as are the brakes but can still lock a wheel if not careful.

    Linear torque so roll on's from 2800rpm work well.

    Pilot Road 2's more than enough grip... especially in the wet.

    Has road presence..... especially if an aftermarket exhaust is fitted.

    Apart from Cam chain tensioners, regular oil/filters..... the thing is Honda reliable.

    + 1 to mostly everything, albeit some comments are more personal preference than specific issues. Fuel range is not great if looking to tour and are thirsty - an issue to some. Not awesome quick by modern standards but still great fun (the speed limit is still 100kmh right?)
