If you New Years Resolution is to get your bike licence, then make sure you get on to it, ASAP.
Especially if you are over 25.
From the 1st October, the new regulations come in, that mean you will spend 18 months on your restricted bike licence, (currently 6 months)...
EIGHTEEN MONTHS!!!!!!!! 3 times the length of the restricted licence now.
If you don't want to spend that long on your restricted, then I suggest that you get on to your basic handling skills ASAP!!

It may or may not do. Going by what has happened with the rise in age fro car/bike candidates, they have applied part of the new system to the people who were already in the middle of the GDLS, in so far as those looking to sit their full licence, need to be 17 before being allowed to book thier full test, and filling out an exemption form as well.

It is hard to know how the MoT will play it out.
My belief is that it should only apply to those starting out, but past experience has told me that it may well apply to those currently in the GDLS for Class 6.
Hopefully when I go to the next meeting about it, I can raise this question, as well as the one about the registration cost for restricted, learner legal 650cc motorbikes.

What I THINK will happen is that those who are just getting on to their restricted, especially those under 25, may well be made to wair the full 18 months, and those over 25 will be allowed to finish in 6 months.
It is a waiting game, unfortunately..

If the car changes are anything to go by, in order to be accepted for exemption, you need to have a clean riding record, no run-ins with the police, and have fulfilled the time requirement.
As mentioned in the next post, I will enquire when I go to the next meeting in Wellington..

From 27th February, the Restricted Licence test for cars and motorcycles will become 1 hours long, and the price will increase to that of the current full licence test. The full licence test, will be reduced to the 30 minutes, and the price (should ) reduce to that of the current restricted licence test.

the much higher standard motorcycle testing should be starting in October.

From what I have been told the answer is YES....
Give me a shout when you have your restricted, and we can talk about the DDC for you... Unless you would like to do a training session on Sunday to make sure you will pass??

My drivers licence consisted of taking the cop to the bakery and back, maybe 5 mins. Gotta love the old days.

Yes, I do in Orewa. The AA DDC doesn't cover anything about motorbikes, unfortunately. It is 4 x 2 hour theory sessions and a one hour practical assessment.
I suggest though that you give me a shout so that we can discuss it properly.

I have two friends who were pinged under that new law change for cars, one of them is able to apply for an exemption while the other can't due to getting pulled up just a few weeks before he would've been able to.
I myself am doing the BHS asap and getting my learners not long after.
