I rode the road from Methen, past Highbank, through Barrhill and into Rakaia many years ago. It may have too much slope, dunno. But I remember that it was flat with very wide verges, almost no houses etc. I am told it is long enough that you can keep the throttle wide open for a looong time and experiment with the effect of sitting upright or lying flat on the tank. If that ones no good there may be some other good candiates in the area

Seven mile road is long enough, probably flat enough both ways, but from memory it has fences, ditches and power poles fairly close by.

I have ridden on the stretch you mention and did go back there when i was looking at roads, it is a truly good piece of road but not consistent in quality for long enough stretches, i had one stretch in the back of my mind as a back up if the Chertsey Kyle ROad fell through even though it was a bit shorter.
We learned a lot about roads and surfaces in the preparation for the record, even small undulations or changes in camber can have a marked effect on the handling of the bike at high speed, and as we are now looking at possibly lifting the bar over the 350kmh mark it has become much more important that the road is reallly flat!
One more thing that i thought of when looking for the perfect road - wind direction and strength at different times of year, find the nearest met office station ( often airports or council offices or try private weather forecasting types) and check out the records,
It sounds like a lot of work but this was how i did it, i would really laugh if somebody pointed me to website that would have told me in a flash!
    anyway, thanks for the tip

I believe that the longest straight section of road in NZ is near Matamata. its the back road from Whaharoa to Te Aroha and has a 13km long straight section. However there are a number of side roads and I'm not sure that it would be smooth enough for the speeds you are suggesting.

Good luck with you efforts anyway.

Or, shock, horror, You could try Oz Lots of straight roads there, and it might not cost that much more to get the sidecar there. Would love for this to be done in NZ, but you are more likely to get what you want in Oz.

Yep Goudie Rd in Reporoa is the site, thats where Owen Evans attempted/broke(?) the 4 wheel ls record, and broke the porsche + some of himself doing it. Such a quiet and little used road there should be no trouble getting a closure as it will not affect anyone much.I live 4km away if you want more info/pixs etc let me know...no trouble at all.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. 7 miles ~ 11km. It is perfectly straight and very flat and level. Theres lots of alternative way for people to get around it too. It comes off SH1 right by Oamaru airport. Heres a map:

    HI Jonty
Thanks for the map on the road in Oamaru, it looks really straight but what is it like on the ground, camber, gradient, road condition etc,
is it convenient for you to go and have a look and report back? i would be grateful if you could.
    MAny thanks

1- The road needs to be within 1% gradient for at least 4km
2- surface must be flat and with minimum camber, bumps can be repaired, camber can not.
3- Telegraph poles, trees, fences, pylons etc. must be as far as possible from the road, non existent if possible!
4- a suitable diversion must exist for regular users of the road.
5- The GOvt will not allow us to close State Highways so we are automatically down to B roads.
6- Permission will need to be gained from all landowners and residents, for the road in Chertsey i had to write to 28 people even though we actually went passed only 2 houses

Any suitable roads that you guys know of, please add these things into the mix and see if they stack up.

you would think the govt would say hay lets help these crazy ass head down go fast bikers and put this country on the map as the fastest but oh sorry just woke up and the govt is still fighting over scraps
lets all meet some were and close the road by our selves and then you guys can do your vooooom thing and we happy to help and you get what you want ill help you close a road any thing to stop cars
