What to ride?

Hi guys and gals,

I'm looking to get into riding, I have always been a biker just with out the bike.

my dilemma is I'm currently 110kg and looking to commute from Auckland to the Glenbrook steel mill every day. (Around 40 min commute) also looking to build up my confidence with the ultimate goal of a Moto Morini 1200, Moto-Guzzi
Griso 1200 8V, or speed tripple

so what would you recommend for some one of my stature to learn on that will be comfortable on the open road???

any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yeah I would love to but I think id probably kill myself learning on one of those.

I have been recommended just to learn on a RVG 250 as it might have enough grunt to lugg my big ass around.. anyone else think so?

A bike... definitely a bike.

We are of course, a motorcycle forum, so we'd naturally suggest one equipped with an engine. Hippie type people may suggest one of those pedal powered contraptions, but I doubt they'll ever catch on.

Don't bother with dogs or cats, they'll never handle that kind of distance, day after day. Horses are big bastards, and you need a stable to keep them, and they eat heaps.

I've been looking for bikes for a while, and found that most 250's are just a little too small to be comfortable
though I havn't been looking at cruisers (they're just not my thing)

and the only bikes I've found that fit me well and would be comfortable for more than 30 minutes are the Hyosung 250's
they've got the same size frame as a 650, which does make a big difference to comfort.

So. You like the idea of riding, but never taken it up? And you don't have a Class 6 on your licence?
Until LAMS comes in, you are stuck with 250cc, if you want to be legal.
Forget a 2 stroke - lots of fun, but only got any 'go' when you're caning them. Nor are they really designed for daily commute-type riding.
Comfort is up to the individual. Some like to 'spread out', some like to fold into the sprotbike crouch. You have to sit on a bike for a while to know what's right for you.
V twins make great starting-out bikes, and performance-wise will keep you happy for longer than a single.

Going by your "wish list" you like naked rides, so what about a GSF 250 Bandit?

I know of a rather "Chunky" man who rides a Hyobag GT250R and it seems to haul his arse around pretty well.

I'm 110kg and 6' 1" and I can tell you no worries, a lot of bikes at the 220-250cc range can carry lardy asses like ours around easily.

I've got a Yamaha Scorpio, not the largest of the 250s (it's actually a 223cc) and it still easily brings me from point A to B (about 30 mins commute to work each way) at 120kph cruising. But of course, if you're looking for a speed machine, then there are a select range of bikes which fit your needs better, and there are more knowledgeable and qualified people here who can point you at the right models...

For me, it's more a matter of comfort than engine power or speed. You've got to check legroom, for example, as even some big 250cc bikes like the Hyosung GT250 Comet (naked version) may be tall enough and large enough, but your legs can feel pretty crammed up - I didn't like it even though the seat was comfy and the bike felt solid and stable.

that is one thing the Hyosung GT250R is not.
the chassis is different, and significantly bigger,
completely different engine, Vtwin vs Parallel twin for the ninja.

so, definitely not a re-badged ninja

If you are going to spend that sort of money on a bike made in Kazakhstan or similar, you should get a Hyobag. They are more than capable of lugging your fat arse around, and have decent build quality and dealer network. Just dont expect to set any landspeed record on it.
