Announce NZ riding trip, end of December?

Hi Folks - am looking to fly in from India for an 8 day riding trip this December - from 23rd to the 31st. Have heard great things about motorbiking in NZ and just had to try it for myself. Any ideas or suggestions for the route and motorbike rental options?
I plan to fly into and out of Auckland - so the route needs to begin there on the 24th and end there on the 31st.
    Suggestions are welcome.

    South island

Mate that is not long enough to get to the best riding, roads and scenery which is south island. I would head north avoiding sh1 all way to cape rienga then maybe coromandel and south if time.
Stuff everything...I've always got my bike.

Have a great time, that said you are bang in the middle of the holiday season so expect to see plenty of wallies out on the roads. Check out trademe.co.nz for a cheap bike if you want to buy, though hardly worth it for the short stay.
